BEMIDJI — Chad Bullock is no stranger to the Bemidji area. The new leader of Paul Bunyan Communications is a graduate of Bemidji State University, and two of his three children were born here when he worked for Blackduck Telephone Company. “So we feel like we’re moving home,” Bullock said. He actually joined the cooperative 12 months ago and has spent the past year learning the ropes from Gary Johnson, the man he is replacing next week as chief executive officer and general manager. “It was a great opportunity,” Bullock said. “Gary’s a great mentor. He’s a leader in our industry, and the fact that I could spend a year learning from him, I’m going to soak it up as much as I can and use that as an opportunity to grow myself.” Bullock grew up in the Remer, Minn. area, and studied technology at what is now Minnesota State Community and Technical College in Wadena before landing his first job in Iowa. After being hired at Blackduck Telephone, he attended BSU and earned a management degree. He was in Blackduck for 12 years, then spent seven years managing Emily (Minn.) Cooperative Telephone and nine years managing West Central Telephone in Sebeka. Bullock looks forward to leading Paul Bunyan Communications as it continues to grow into areas that are unserved with broadband. “Paul Bunyan’s goals have always revolved around their commitment to the cooperative membership,” he said. “That idea of serving communities will continue. Our expansion focus will still be on areas that don’t have service, growing our membership. Paul Bunyan is always going to be at the forefront of technology. That won’t change.” He also is excited to follow Johnson’s lead in serving the Bemidji community and the telecommunications industry. “I worked in the industry as a colleague of Gary’s for the last 10 to 12 years,” Bullock said. “He has always carried the Paul Bunyan Communications banner wherever he went. They’re definitely big shoes to fill, but the team that has been built here and the board’s focus is consistent, and that consistency is going to carry through regardless of who’s leading us.”Coastal Carolina 73, SC-Upstate 51Domo Ranked #1 Vendor in Dresner Advisory Services’ 2024 Analytical Platforms Report
US sanctions the founder of Georgia's ruling political partyIs Enron back? If it’s a joke, some former employees aren’t laughing
Charles Schwab Investment Management Inc. Buys 83,503 Shares of United Bankshares, Inc. (NASDAQ:UBSI)By JUAN A. LOZANO, Associated Press HOUSTON (AP) — An elaborate parody appears to be behind an effort to resurrect Enron, the Houston-based energy company that exemplified the worst in American corporate fraud and greed after it went bankrupt in 2001. If its return is comedic, some former employees who lost everything in Enron’s collapse aren’t laughing. “It’s a pretty sick joke and it disparages the people that did work there. And why would you want to even bring it back up again?” said former Enron employee Diana Peters, who represented workers in the company’s bankruptcy proceedings. Here’s what to know about the history of Enron and the purported effort to bring it back. Once the nation’s seventh-largest company, Enron filed for bankruptcy protection on Dec. 2, 2001, after years of accounting tricks could no longer hide billions of dollars in debt or make failing ventures appear profitable. The energy company’s collapse put more than 5,000 people out of work, wiped out more than $2 billion in employee pensions and rendered $60 billion in Enron stock worthless. Its aftershocks were felt throughout the energy sector. Twenty-four Enron executives , including former CEO Jeffrey Skilling , were eventually convicted for their roles in the fraud. Enron founder Ken Lay’s convictions were vacated after he died of heart disease following his 2006 trial. On Monday — the 23rd anniversary of the bankruptcy filing — a company representing itself as Enron announced in a news release that it was relaunching as a “company dedicated to solving the global energy crisis.” It also posted a video on social media, advertised on at least one Houston billboard and a took out a full-page ad in the Houston Chronicle In the minute-long video that was full of generic corporate jargon, the company talks about “growth” and “rebirth.” It ends with the words, “We’re back. Can we talk?” Enron’s new website features a company store, where various items featuring the brand’s tilted “E” logo are for sale, including a $118 hoodie. In an email, company spokesperson Will Chabot said the new Enron was not doing any interviews yet, but that “We’ll have more to share soon.” Signs point to the comeback being a joke. In the “terms of use and conditions of sale” on the company’s website, it says “the information on the website about Enron is First Amendment protected parody, represents performance art, and is for entertainment purposes only.” Documents filed with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office show that College Company, an Arkansas-based LLC, owns the Enron trademark. The co-founder of College Company is Connor Gaydos, who helped create a joke conspiracy theory that claims all birds are actually surveillance drones for the government. Peters said that since learning about the “relaunch” of Enron, she has spoken with several other former employees and they are also upset by it. She said the apparent stunt was “in poor taste.” “If it’s a joke, it’s rude, extremely rude. And I hope that they realize it and apologize to all of the Enron employees,” Peters said. Peters, who is 74 years old, said she is still working in information technology because “I lost everything in Enron, and so my Social Security doesn’t always take care of things I need done.” “Enron’s downfall taught us critical lessons about corporate ethics, accountability, and the consequences of unchecked ambition. Enron’s legacy was the employees in the trenches. Leave Enron buried,” she said. Follow Juan A. Ludhiana: AAP ticket aspirants ramp up election campaignPep Guardiola has hit back at suggestions he is not selecting because of a rift with the midfielder. De Bruyne has been restricted to five substitute appearances since returning from an abdominal injury suffered against in September. Guardiola waited until City were against on Sunday before introducing the 33-year-old from the bench. It prompted Sky Sports pundits Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher to speculate that there is a simmering problem between the player and manager. Neville said the situation with De Bruyne is "unusual, bizarre, strange" and that "something is definitely going on in the dressing room." It was a view backed up by Carrager, who said "something is going on with De Bruyne" and "something isn't right if he isn't in the team when he is fit." In a news conference on Tuesday, Guardiola was not asked directly about the situation with De Bruyne. Instead, he addressed it unprompted. "People say I've got a problem with Kevin," Guardiola said. "Do you think I like to not play with Kevin? No, I don't want Kevin to play. The guy who has the most talent in the final third. I don't want it. I have a personal problem with him after nine years together. "He's delivered to me the biggest success to this club. But he's been five months injured and two months injured. He's 33-years-old. "He needs time to find his best. Like last season, step by step. He'll try to do it and feel better. I'm desperate to have his best." Guardiola hinted De Bruyne could return to the team when they next play -- against in the on Wednesday -- after he played the final 12 minutes at Anfield. City are hoping to end a run of seven games without a win when they line up against Nuno Espírito Santo's side, who sit sixth in the Premier League table. Four consecutive league defeats has seen City slip to fifth. While Guardiola is keen to have De Bruyne back, he is warned that the international will "not solve our problems." "I'd love to have the Kevin in his prime -- 26 or 27," Guardiola said. "He would love it too. But he is not 26 or 27 anymore. He had injuries in the past, important and long ones. He is a guy who needs to be physically fit for his space and energy. "He played in 10 or 11 seasons a lot of games. I know he is desperate to help us, he gives glimpses of brilliance that only he can have. "But always I said, he himself will not solve our problems. Like Erling [Haaland] won't solve it himself. We attack and defend together. We want the best players back. Hopefully step by step the confidence will come back and we'll get the best of all of us."New Hampshire Life Sciences adds new members to close out first year
