Steve Mensch, the president and general manager of studio operations at Tyler Perry Studios, died in a plane crash Friday night, according to officials. The Florida Highway Patrol said troopers found Mensch dead at the scene of a crash just after 8 p.m. in Citrus County, Florida. The agency does not name Mensch as the man who died, though the Citrus County Sheriff’s Office said it was Mensch, 62, from Fayetteville, Georgia. “FHP Troopers responded to a single engine fixed-wing airplane crash on West White Dogwood Drive near the intersection of US-98,” FHP said in a statement. “An adult male occupant of the aircraft was pronounced deceased at the scene of the crash.” In an email to CNN on Saturday, Tyler Perry Studios said: “We are incredibly saddened by the passing of our dear friend, Steve Mensch. Steve was a cherished member of our team for more than 8 years, and well beloved in the community of Atlanta. It is hard to imagine not seeing him smiling throughout the halls. We will miss him dearly. Our heart goes out to his family as we all send them our prayers.” The Federal Aviation Administration said the pilot was the only person on board the single-engine Vans RV12, though the agency did not mention Mensch by name. A National Transportation Safety Board investigator is expected to visit the crash site Saturday to begin documenting the scene and examining the aircraft, the NTSB told CNN in an email. A preliminary report from the agency about the crash is expected within 30 days. Mensch managed the day-to-day operations at Tyler Perry Studios, a 300-acre studio lot in Atlanta, Georgia, according to his LinkedIn profile. In 2019, Mensch gave CNN a tour of the facility, saying, “What Tyler has built here is the only major motion picture studio on the East Coast.” Mensch explained at the time how the studio he oversaw blended old with new, saying, “The history on this property is immense. Founded in 1885, we have 40 buildings on the national register, we’ve built a dozen state of the art sound stages.” “We can take advantage of a hundred years of Hollywood history, of best practices and we’ve done that in incorporating the stages,” he said at the time. “Then we use the very best technology in our infrastructure, so we have the best of both.” Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp expressed his condolences on social media after Mensch’s death, praising him as “a good man” and his contributions to the Peach State’s film industry. “A good man and an instrumental part of a studio Georgia is proud to call its own, his achievements made our state better and brought more opportunities to its people,” Kemp said on X. “His loved ones and the entire Tyler Perry Studios team will be in our thoughts and prayers as they mourn this loss.” CNN’s Lisa Respers France and Kia Fatahi contributed to this report. Are you tracking your health with a device? Brazilian police indict former President Bolsonaro and aides over alleged 2022 coup attemptWisconsin faces its first losing season in 23 years and the end of a bowl streak when the Badgers host arch-rival Minnesota on Friday in the annual Big Ten battle for Paul Bunyan's Axe. Minnesota (6-5, 4-4) lost to No. 4 Penn State 26-25. Wisconsin (5-6, 3-5 Big Ten) lost its fourth straight, 44-25, at Nebraska in a game that was not as close as the score. "Well 1890 is the first time we played this football team coming up and this is what it's all about," Minnesota coach P.J. Fleck said of the rivalry. "And you wouldn't want to have it any other way, being able to end the season with one of your biggest rivals. I know our guys will be ready to go, ready to play." Wisconsin has 22 consecutive winning seasons since going 5-7 under Barry Alvarez in 2001, the longest active streak among Power 4 teams. The Badgers also have played in a bowl game in each of the last 22 seasons, the longest active streak in the Big Ten and third-longest in FBS. Wisconsin coach Luke Fickell is more concerned with the rivalry game than the winning season and bowl streaks. "I'm not downplaying it, I'm not saying it's not important, I'm not saying it's another thing that's on our plate," Fickell said Monday. "But when it gets down to this last week, it's about one thing, it's about the rivalry. It's about preparing to play in the most important game of the year." The Gophers have dropped their last two games after winning four in a row. Minnesota averages 26.6 points per game, while allowing 18.5, 15th-best in the country. Max Brosmer has completed 67 percent of his passes for 221 per game with 15 touchdowns and five interceptions. Daniel Jackson is the top target with 69 catches for 802 yards and three scores, and Darius Taylor is the top rusher with 730 yards at 4.8 per carry with nine touchdowns. One week after leading Oregon after three quarters, the Wisconsin defense was shredded for 473 yards and five touchdowns by Nebraska. Braedyn Locke, who took over at quarterback when Tyler Van Dyke suffered an early season-ending knee injury, has thrown at least one interception in eight consecutive games. Locke has completed 56.4 percent of his passes for 180.6 yards per game, with 12 touchdowns and 10 picks. Tawee Walker is the leading rusher with 828 yards at 4.7 per carry with 10 touchdowns. He has failed to reach 60 yards in three of the last four games. Former Wisconsin and NFL standout JJ Watt posted on social media his assessment - and frustration - with the Badgers after the Nebraska game. "Losing happens, it's part of the game. Hearing announcers talk about how much tougher and more physical Nebraska & Iowa are while getting blown out ... that's the issue," Watt wrote on X. "We are Wisconsin. Physicality, running game, great O-Line and great defense. That is our identity." Wisconsin defeated the Gophers 28-14 last after Minnesota had won the previous two meetings. The Badgers have won 7 of the last 10 and lead the storied series 63-62-8. --Field Level MediaNate Silver Roasts Harris Aides for Crying ‘Double Standard’ - The Daily BeastDown, Never Out: Governors reflect on 2024 season, the end of an era, and a new start

-- Shares Facebook Twitter Reddit Email The only constant of Donald Trump 's transition into his second term has been chaos. The president-elect nominates friends, lackeys and people he's seen on TV via late-night posts to his personal social media page. Trump's hinted at forgoing the typical background checks on his nominees as allegations of misconduct pile up around them and the seemingly slapdash nature of Trump's process is starting to chafe lawmakers. A new report from NBC News spoke with Trump transition insiders and Republican politicians on the Hill to take the temperature of Trump's shamble toward the Oval Office. One GOP senator, who spoke to the outlet on the condition of anonymity, said that Trump's team "botched up the nomination process pretty bad." "They clearly aren’t vetting these people," they shared. That tracks with reports that Trump's team was surprised by allegations against Pete Hegseth, a former Fox News host who was tagged by Trump to lead the Department of Defense. Since his nomination to the role last month, a police report in which a woman claimed Hegseth sexually assaulted her surfaced alongside whistleblower reports that claimed Hegseth had a drinking problem . Related Welcome to the New Dark Ages Some of the chaos can be attributed to the many voices in Trump's ear. One insider compared the atmosphere around the president-elect to "Game of Thrones," with various factions jockeying for power via their recommendations. “It’s like ‘Game of Thrones’ over there. I think [Donald Trump Jr.] has been trying to do things at times. It’s like [chief of staff] Susie [Wiles] will have a meeting and then Don Jr. will say something else," the source shared. An unnamed Trump ally said that Elon Musk has never been far from Trump since Election Day. The source shared that the head of the as-yet uncreated Department of Government Efficiency was a big driver behind Trump's controversial choice of Kash Patel to lead the FBI. “I think he is around Musk more than anyone else,” they shared. “There are several of the traditional sort of transition tensions and fighting over picks, but Musk casts a huge shadow.” Read more about Trump's Cabinet Buying a presidency: Elon Musk spent over $250 million to elect Donald Trump Trump wanted to build an anti-#MeToo Cabinet — but it's backfiring badly Trump DEA pick bows out just days after being nominated MORE FROM Alex Galbraith Advertisement:ABUJA – The Corporate Accountability and Public Participation Africa (CAPPA) and the National Tobacco Control Alliance (NTCA) have called on the Nigerian government and lawmakers to strengthen the National Tobacco Control Act, 2015, to protect public health and prevent the exploitation of vulnerable populations. According to CAPPA, recent efforts to review the Act are a step in the right direction, but any amendments must prioritize the protection of public health and strengthen regulatory oversight. The group emphasized that the review must also close loopholes that allow the tobacco industry to exploit Nigerians. A public hearing was held last week at the House of Representatives to discuss two proposed Bills aimed at amending the National Tobacco Control Act, 2015. While these Bills present an opportunity to strengthen tobacco control in Nigeria, CAPPA noted that they also reveal gaps that must be addressed to ensure that the proposed amendments align with the ultimate goal of safeguarding public well-being. Akinbode Oluwafemi, the Executive Director of CAPPA, said the organization’s call to action is not isolated, as the group has consistently advocated for the full implementation of the National Tobacco Control Act and its regulations, enhanced transparency in government dealings with the tobacco industry, and the denormalization of the tobacco industry’s so-called socially responsible activities. Oluwafemi also said the need to reinforce Nigeria’s tobacco control framework cannot be overstated, urging the Nigerian government and lawmakers to take decisive action to strengthen the tobacco control law and protect the health and well-being of Nigerians. He said current gaps in the existing regulation not only leave vulnerable populations exposed to the harms of tobacco but also provide fertile ground for the industry to exploit emerging products such as e-cigarettes, snus, smokeless tobacco and vapes ,among others ,which are now advertised to young Nigerians as the new cool. Also speaking, the Senior Programme Manager, Policy Research of CAPPA, Zikora Ibeh while briefing newsmen in Abuja said they strongly recommended that this bill be withdrawn. She explained that a public hearing was held last week at the House of Representatives to discuss two proposed Bills aimed at amending the National Tobacco Control Act (NTCA) 2015, titled House Bill (HB) 47 and HB 1151. She said while these Bills represent an opportunity to strengthen tobacco control in Nigeria, they also reveal gaps that must be addressed to ensure that their proposed amendments align with what ought to be the ultimate goal, which is safeguarding the well-being of all Nigerians over the profit-driven interests of the tobacco industry. She said the HB 1151, which seeks to impose stiffer penalties for violations of smoking regulations, suffers from a fundamental flaw in misrepresenting the title of the Principal Act and the referenced Sections for amendments. “Regarding HB 47, which aims to cure certain defects in the NTCA 2015, ensure its effective implementation, as well as address the lacuna that may exploited by the tobacco industry in Nigeria, we have commended its intent but highlighted some gaps and areas that require strengthening. She recommended that there is need to Strengthen the Law and Regulation to Cover New and Emerging Tobacco Products: Emerging products such as vapes, e-cigarettes, nicotine pouches, heat-not-burn devices, and smokeless tobacco remain largely unregulated under the NTCA 2015. According to her, these products, which have rapidly gained traction, are aggressively marketed to youth and often falsely advertised as “safer alternatives.”

A day after team in the country in the season’s opening month, Cori Close showed up at the practice facility to see another early riser. Her players. Nine Bruins were already on the court when Close arrived at 6:40 a.m. Tuesday. “That told me what I needed to know,” Close said Wednesday, “about where their vision really is and where their aspirations lie.” As Close has repeatedly said, it’s not where you are in late November but where you are at the end of the season that counts. That’s not to say that hasn’t enjoyed the perks of rising to No. 1 in the Associated Press rankings for the first time in school history following a 15-point . Close said she received an “amazing text” from Bruins legend while also being congratulated by professors, chancellors and former coaches. Three television cameras showed up at practice Wednesday, exceeding recent media turnout for the football and men’s basketball teams. “This is not something you do alone, it takes a village,” Close said, “and to share it with the village is really great.” There was also a larger trend to celebrate. UCLA is only the 26th team to hold the No. 1 ranking in the 40 years of the AP women’s poll. “The parity of our game,” Close said, “is just getting better.” Although , Close identified several areas that needed improvement, including defensive rebounding, transition defense, communication and off-ball rotations. Maybe the fact that so much went wrong in a blowout victory was the most encouraging development for a team that wants to win it all. “ said, ‘It makes me so excited that we were able to play at such a high level and we have so much more we need to grow in,’ ” Close said, referencing the junior forward who has established herself as one of the top reserves in the country because of her toughness and playmaking. Among the things that Close will be tracking closely when the Bruins (5-0) open play in the Rainbow Wahine Showdown on Friday in Honolulu against Tennessee-Martin (1-4) is rebounding. Although leading the country in offensive rebounding thanks in large part to the presence of center , UCLA ranks in the 74th percentile in defensive rebounding. “With our size and our depth, it should not be that way,” Close said. “So we’ve got a lot still to work on.” Close is also monitoring turnovers. The Bruins committed 16 against the Gamecocks, exceeding the maximum of 11 their coach wants per game. What might have made UCLA’s top ranking most meaningful, Close said, was that it reinforced the image the team already had of itself. “I really felt no different,” Close said, “because we already saw ourselves as a No. 1 team and with championship habits and commitments and aspirations; it’s just other people got to see it, and I think that’s why we performed that way.” One monumental victory down, three-plus months to their intended destination to go.
