From an anonymous office in a New Delhi mall, matrimonial detective Bhavna Paliwal runs the rule over prospective husbands and wives - a booming industry in India, where younger generations are increasingly choosing love matches over arranged marriage. The tradition of partners being carefully selected by the two families remains hugely popular, but in a country where social customs are changing rapidly, more and more couples are making their own matches. So for some families, the first step when young lovers want to get married is not to call a priest or party planner but a sleuth like Paliwal with high-tech spy tools to investigate the prospective partner. Sheela, an office worker in New Delhi, said that when her daughter announced she wanted to marry her boyfriend, she immediately hired Paliwal. “I had a bad marriage,” said Sheela, whose name has been changed as her daughter remains unaware her fiance was spied on. “When my daughter said she’s in love, I wanted to support her - but not without proper checks.” Paliwal, 48, who founded her Tejas Detective Agency more than two decades ago, says business is better than ever. Her team handles around eight cases monthly. In one recent case - a client checking her prospective husband - Paliwal discovered a decimal point salary discrepancy. “The man said he earns around $70,700 annually,” Paliwal said. “We found out he was actually making $7,070.” It is discreet work. Paliwal’s office is tucked away in a city mall, with an innocuous sign board saying it houses an astrologer -- a service families often use to predict an auspicious wedding date. “Sometimes my clients also don’t want people to know they are meeting a detective,” she laughed. Hiring a detective can cost from $100-2,000, depending on the extent of surveillance needed. That is a small investment for families who splash out many times more on the wedding itself. It is not just worried parents trying to vet their prospective sons or daughters-in-law. Some want background checks on their future spouse - or, after marriage, to confirm a suspected affair. “It is a service to society,” said Sanjay Singh, a 51-year-old sleuth, who says his agency has handled “hundreds” of pre-matrimonial investigations this year alone. Private eye Akriti Khatri said around a quarter of cases at her Venus Detective Agency were pre-marriage checks. Arranged marriages binding two entire families together require a chain of checks before the couple even talk. That includes financial probes and, crucially, their status in India’s millennia-old caste hierarchy. Marriages breaking rigid caste or religious divisions can have deadly repercussions, sometimes resulting in so-called “honour” killings. In the past, such premarital checks were often done by family members, priests or professional matchmakers. But breakneck urbanisation in sprawling megacities has shaken social networks, challenging conventional ways of verifying marriage proposals. Arranged marriages now also happen online through matchmaking websites, or even dating apps. “Marriage proposals come on Tinder too,” added Singh. The job is not without its challenges. Layers of security in guarded modern apartment blocks mean it is often far harder for an agent to gain access to a property than older standalone homes. Singh said detectives had to rely on their charm to tell a “cock and bull story” to enter, saying his teams tread the grey zone between “legal and illegal”. But he stressed his agents operate on the right side of the law, ordering his teams to do “nothing unethical” while noting investigations often mean “somebody’s life is getting ruined”. Technology is on the side of the sleuths. Khatri has used tech developers to create an app for her agents to upload records directly online - leaving nothing on agents’ phones, in case they are caught. “This is safer for our team,” she said, adding it also helped them “get sharp results in less time and cost”. Surveillance tools starting at only a few dollars are readily available. Those include audio and video recording devices hidden in everyday items such as mosquito repellent socket devices, to more sophisticated magnetic GPS car trackers or tiny wearable cameras. The technology boom, Paliwal said, has put relationships under pressure. “The more hi-tech we become, the more problems we have in our lives,” she said. But she insisted that neither the technology nor the detectives should take the blame for exposing a cheat. “Such relationships would not have lasted anyway”, she said. “No relationship can work on the basis of lies.”
Name a hot topic, and chances are good there's a new law about it taking effect in 2025 in one state or another. Many of the laws launching in January are a result of legislation passed this year. Others stem from ballot measures approved by voters. Some face legal challenges. Here's a look at some of the most notable state laws taking effect: Hollywood stars and child influencers California, home to Hollywood and some of the largest technology companies, is seeking to rein in the artificial intelligence industry and put some parameters around social media stars. New laws seek to prevent the use of digital replicas of Hollywood actors and performers without permission and allow the estates of dead performers to sue over unauthorized AI use. Parents who profit from social media posts featuring their children will be required to set aside some earnings for their young influencers. A new law also allows children to sue their parents for failing to do so. Social media limits New social media restrictions in several states face court challenges. A Florida law bans children under 14 from having social media accounts and requires parental consent for ages 14 and 15. But enforcement is being delayed because of a lawsuit filed by two associations for online companies, with a hearing scheduled for late February. A new Tennessee law also requires parental consent for minors to open accounts on social media. NetChoice, an industry group for online businesses, is challenging the law. Another new state law requires porn websites to verify that visitors are at least 18 years old. But the Free Speech Coalition, a trade association for the adult entertainment industry, has filed a challenge. Several new California measures aimed at combating political deepfakes are also being challenged, including one requiring large social media platforms to remove deceptive content related to elections and another allowing any individual to sue for damages over the use of AI to create fabricated images or videos in political ads. School rules on gender In a first nationally, California will start enforcing a law prohibiting school districts from adopting policies that require staff to notify parents if their children change their gender identification. The law was a priority for Democratic lawmakers who wanted to halt such policies passed by several districts. Abortion coverage Many states have passed laws limiting or protecting abortion rights since the U.S. Supreme Court overturned a nationwide right to the procedure in 2022. One of the latest is the Democratic-led state of Delaware. A law there will require the state employee health plan and Medicaid plans for lower-income residents to cover abortions with no deductible, copayments or other cost-sharing requirements. Gun control A new Minnesota law prohibits guns with "binary triggers" that allow for more rapid fire, causing a weapon to fire one round when the trigger is pulled and another when it is released. In Delaware, a law adds colleges and universities to a list of school zones where guns are prohibited, with exceptions for those working in their official capacity such as law officers and commissioned security guards. Medical marijuana Kentucky is becoming the latest state to let people use marijuana for medical purposes. To apply for a state medical cannabis card, people must get written certification from a medical provider of a qualifying condition, such as cancer, multiple sclerosis, chronic pain, epilepsy, chronic nausea or post-traumatic stress disorder. Nearly four-fifths of U.S. states have now legalized medical marijuana. Minimum wages Minimum wage workers in more than 20 states are due to receive raises in January. The highest minimum wages will be in Washington, California and Connecticut, all of which will top $16 an hour after modest increases. The largest increases are scheduled in Delaware, where the minimum wage will rise by $1.75 to $15 an hour, and in Nebraska, where a ballot measure approved by voters in 2022 will add $1.50 to the current minimum of $12 an hour. Twenty other states still follow the federal minimum wage of $7.25 an hour. Safer traveling In Oregon, using drugs on public transit will be considered a misdemeanor crime of interfering with public transportation. While the measure worked its way through the legislature, multiple transportation officials said drug use on buses and trains, and at transit stops and stations, was making passengers and drivers feel less safe. In Missouri, law enforcement officers have spent the past 16 months issuing warnings to motorists that handheld cellphone use is illegal. Starting with the new year, penalties will kick in: a $150 fine for the first violation, progressing to $500 for third and subsequent offenses and up to 15 years imprisonment if a driver using a cellphone cause an injury or death. But police must notice a primary violation, such as speeding or weaving across lanes, to cite motorists for violating the cellphone law. Montana is the only state that hasn't banned texting while driving, according to the National Conference of State Legislatures. Tax breaks Tenants in Arizona will no longer have to pay tax on their monthly rent, thanks to the repeal of a law that had allowed cities and towns to impose such taxes. While a victory for renters, the new law is a financial loss for governments. An analysis by Arizona's nonpartisan Joint Legislative Budget Committee estimated that $230 million would be lost in municipal tax revenue during the first full fiscal year of implementation. Meanwhile Alabama will offer tax credits to businesses that help employees with child care costs. Kansas is eliminating its 2% sales tax on groceries. It also is cutting individual income taxes by dropping the top tax rate, increasing a credit for child care expenses and exempting all Social Security income from taxes, among other things. Taxpayers are expected to save about $320 million a year going forward. Voting rights An Oklahoma law expands voting privileges to people who have been convicted of felonies but had their sentences discharged or commuted, including commutations for crimes that have been reclassified from felonies to misdemeanors. Former state Sen. George Young, an Oklahoma City Democrat, carried the bill in the Senate. "I think it's very important that people who have gone through trials and tribulations in their life, that we have a system that brings them back and allows them to participate as contributing citizens," Young said. Like other states of the country, the J&K administration is enthusiastically pushing for a paradigm shift in the educational sector in light of NEP-2020. However, to achieve the stated goals and objectives and making education and academic journeys meaningful and relevant to the needs of life, our education system and institutions need some radical transformation. Here, I discuss a few aspects of some basic enabling conditions which are a pre-requisite for a sound foundation in context of the NEP-2020. For achieving the goals of quality science education at elementary and secondary school levels, the first and foremost requirement is the availability of proper physical, socio-cultural and psychological spaces to a child learner which is compatible to teaching-learning process and development of creative, analytical and intellectual potentials of the students. Physical spaces, in part, are shaped and characterised by physical infrastructure, quality teachers, quality administration and management and educational resources and practices. The creation of proper socio-cultural and psychological spaces compatible to science education is about providing a proper environment, within and outside classroom, which is based on scientific temperament and attitudes and provides free, un-inhibited and unrestricted spaces for activity-based teaching-learning, open culture of exploration, challenging spirit towards the known ideas, spirit of scientific enquiries and questioning, thinking out-of-box solutions, high order thinking challenges, and knowledge through experimentation and practice. In order to develop the attitudes towards “Science for Society” and integrating science education for social upliftment and realising the goals of interdisciplinary, multidisciplinary, and trans-disciplinary approaches to science education, field based activities such as visiting agriculture-horticulture forms, dairy-poultry forms, sericulture, mountains climbing, rocks exploration, industrial houses must be given a prominent place in academic calendars of the education institutions. In order to make a paradigm shift in educational scenario, the students from the very young age, particularly in urban areas, should be encouraged to visit villages and other zones of economic activity, made to interact with people to understand the problems in the means of production, GDP, livelihoods and daily needs which can potentially be elevated through scientific interventions, inventions and innovations. Organising of events like science melas , quiz competitions, group and panel discussions, magic shows, science exhibitions, skits and science specific cultural activities, science projects( individual and group based activities) debates and seminars, tests and assignments must find place in school curricula and time-tables. Such physical activities can be augmented by online field visits to places of economic activity, industries and places of cultural importance. Modes of assessment must shift from descriptive mode of examinations to more objective, fun-based, activity based continuous mode of assessment where stress is on assessment of critical and analytical understanding, creative aptitudes and high order thinking. The question papers should be devised to provide a background detail of the concept in story telling manner and to check the comprehension, analytical assimilation of concepts and information -processing skills of the students, as we find in the question papers of Australian National Quiz in Chemistry. Besides, the proper student-teacher ratio, continuous teacher training schemes, provision of scholarships, free uniforms and books to socially marginalized students, better transport facilities are also necessary for realizing the stated out-comes of NEP-2020 in Science Education Physical infrastructure such as proper, adequately ventilated and air-conditioned classrooms, science laboratories, libraries and modern teaching learning gadgets, including smart boards, ICT and e-learning tools, models, sports grounds and related infra-structure are grossly lacking presently in school education system in our state and elsewhere in the country, which need to be upgraded and augmented at war-footing to realize the outcomes and goals of NEP-2022. The most limiting factor in imparting quality science education at primary and secondary level in our state is the absence of quality science laboratories, in the absence of which only one-way classroom teaching is possible leading to memory based rote-learning, instead of demonstrative and participatory science Education. In order to make the goals of NEP 2022 achievable, the science laboratories, which must to be the central-hubs for imparting science education, need to be provided, augmented and modernized in every schools, fully equipped with required science instruments, chemical/glassware and standard safety protocols. Schemes for Mobile laboratories can be adopted and designed which can cater the laboratory needs in far-off rural areas for a period during which the permanent lab- spaces can be created. Availability of quality Science teachers, trained supporting staff such as, lab instructors, laboratory assistants, lab bearers are inevitable and vital for impacting science education in the country. Hence, a concerted and consistent planning and mechanism needs to be in place to employee highly talented, knowledgeable and motivated science teachers in school education department through a highly efficient, transparent and competitive selection process. Vertical career growth and upward mobility must be accessible to quality teachers through evidence based contributions, bench marking parameters and student satisfaction ranking awards, in additional to national level recognitions and honours. Teachers must be given opportunities to undergo and participate in Continuous Professional Development (CPD) programmes , by participation in state, national and international level workshops, seminars and conferences, mentorships and through online educational programmes to remain connected and informed with ever –emerging and latest science knowledge creation and advancement in order to avoid being redundant and obsolete. Only quality teacher training and refresher education programmes spanned over divergent, inter and intra specialized and cross domain scientific knowledge base will make it possible for teachers to provide, interdisciplinary, multidisciplinary, transdisciplinary and integrated education to students based on dynamic multifaceted curriculum as envisioned by NEP-2022. This may need the establishment of the state-of-art Teacher Training Academies at state and national level at par with IAS and NDA type academies, where teacher training, equipment handling, hands on sessions and academic administration training can be giving to teachers as continuous capacity building process. Employing trained supporting staff like lab instructors and Lab Assistants in school education is a prerequisite for importing quality science education, which is dismally lowest in current scheme of things in all states. This issue can be solved by initiating diploma, degree and certificate courses in science laboratory technology training by the Universities and engineering colleges and selection of such supporting staff exclusively based on such professional degrees or diploma qualifications through a open, transparent competitive process. An immediate and radical paradigm shift in overall teaching learning process in Science Education, inclusive of curriculum and pedagogy, shall adopt to the hybrid/imbedded mode of online-offline practices, which requires a large scale hands –on- training in the use of online platforms. Besides, the school system needs to create a resource-pool for e-leaning mode of importing education such as e-modules, audio and video recordings, e-contents such as science animations, documentaries, science fiction and artwork. The students shall have a gradual exposure at varying levels of study and programmes to fast evolving and cutting-edge tools and technologies based on coding, algorithms, machine learning, computational science tools and artificial intelligence. For this computational resources, internet connectivity and teacher training requirements are the essential barriers currently which needs to be overcome for training students to meet the challenge of immediate future in fast changing scenarios in science education, industry and job market. Further, book reading culture, which has largely taken a back-seat in prevalent of internet technology era, needs to be revived to achieve multidimensional personalities, which are socially conscious and culturally imbedded in society as envisioned by NEP2022. In order to achieve this, each school and educational institution should have enriched libraries and reading rooms, which house books on general literature of science, science fiction, science fun in addition to text-book and reference books. Interactive smart-boards in synergism with classic chalk-and –boards in classroom setting can making teaching more fun and excitement, in addition to enhancement of efficiency in teaching-learning process. One of the important focus area of NEP-2022 is to inculcate the spirit of innovations and inventions and promotion of culture of technopreneurship-entrepreneurship amongst youth in general and school students in particular, through educational intervention. The reframing of science curriculum and pedagogy from theory-oriented teaching learning to technology-oriented experimental practices, can potentially lead to technology oriented and innovatively spirited society. The goals of this objective can be achieved with the practices such as school- industry partnerships, Internships at industries and techno-centres, student exchange programmes between institutions of higher learnings, through summer schools and winter schools and society outreach activities at Universities and other institutions of excellence in Sciences. The students at schools levels can be given hands –on training through short training programmes in recent technologies and cutting-edge research. Currently, School Governance model is a semi-bureaucratic model like any other government department, which need to be revamped and designed in a liberal managerial model, where the administration and other stake holders all join hands in a team-like manner to achieve the stated targets of excellence, draft and implement policies, and monitor progress in an evolving and dynamic model. The teachers, administrators, students and the parents need to share the joint responsibility of day-to-day governance of the educational institutions in a responsible manner, establish refined and scientifically devised fool proof mechanism of responsibility. This de-centralized system of governance will infuse a sense of personal responsibility and involvement, leadership skills, belongingness among all stakeholders, personal accountability at all levels and efficient conflict resolution mechanism at educational institutions. The administration, teachers, students and parents must jointly devise the development plans, perspective plans, administrative guidelines and roles through comprehensive and collaborative planning and proposals making, keeping the school-specific and community-specific requirements into consideration. This model if implemented, with some inbuilt and imbedded safe-guards will go a long way in promoting shared leadership and governance and will define the roles and responsibilities of all the stakeholders, Besides, it will also inculcate leadership and managerial skills among the students, for any future role as science institution managers. This will require a well-planned and well-designed training programme t to import necessary skills required for such roles, besides a comprehensive code-of -conduct guidelines for such a model of governance for school institutions. Finally, our education institutions at all levels should focus more on critical thinking, analytical skills, leadership qualities, community service, societal understanding and environmental awareness in students than mere teaching how to pass exams and prepare for competitive selection processes, through active and participatory learning activities. I wonder if our educational institutions can make room for, besides the highly structured syllabus and curriculum based engagements, to occasionally allow students to participate in some wilderness programmes in forests and cycling expeditions to remote countryside areas, to understand nature, immediate ecosystems, history of places, complexities of life, basics of agriculture, horticulture, animal rearing etc. to prepare them for future life. Can our educators think beyond the rigid syllabus based curriculum by way of introducing the students, at all levels, to basics of emerging knowledge domains, disruptive technologies, innovation, entrepreneur skills, leadership capabilities and active social service through internships and voluntary work to obtain research and evidence based knowledge and experiences. Similarly, creating and offering students on-campus part-time jobs and work experiences to run institutional services can also be a means of bolstering self-confidence and the spirit of self-reliance in students and prepares them for a better future.Politicians pay tribute to ‘public servant’ Jimmy Carter after his death aged 100

Mixed reaction from Ottawa business owners, customers on GST exemptionMUMBAI: Senior NCP leader Dhananjay Panditrao Munde is facing the heat as leaders from the opposition as well as ruling parties are making a series of allegations against him, for his close aide’s alleged involvement in the murder of a sarpanch in Beed. The 49-year-old was initially groomed by his uncle, former deputy chief minister and BJP leader late Gopinath Munde. During Munde’s tenure as state deputy chief minister, Dhananjay had kicked up controversies over his high-handedness in Beed, which he used to look after. Following the rise of Gopinath Munde’s daughter Pankaja as his heir apparent, an irked Dhananjay started looking for options beyond his uncle. He was encouraged to stand up to his uncle by a few top leaders in Maharashtra BJP who wanted to keep Munde under control. As he felt that his uncle would not allow him to grow within the party, Dhanajay joined NCP. Keen to build a strong non-Maratha leadership in Marathwada, both Sharad Pawar and his nephew Ajit encouraged Dhanajay. They made him a member of legislative council and later leader of the Opposition in the upper house after the Congress-NCP lost power in 2014. During this tenure, Dhananjay steadily grew as a politician. He managed to take political control of Munde’s Parli constituency and won assembly elections in 2019 by defeating Pankaja and in 2024 opposite an NCP (SP) candidate. He also soon earned the trust of Ajit and became his close aide. After the 2019 assembly election, when Ajit first made the attempt to split NCP, it was Dhananjay who was working the phone to get MLAs on their side. In 2023, when Ajit finally managed to split the NCP, Dhananjay played a key role. He, however, has a penchant for controversies. During his tenure as agriculture minister in the Mahayuti government, he drew flak for forcing the transfer of agriculture secretary who refused certain plans of his department, citing a loss for the exchequer. In 2021, a singer Renu Sharma accused him of rape but later withdrew her complaint. In this episode, Dhananjay confessed that he was in a relation with Renu’s sister Karuna and they have children together. Back home in Beed, he managed to establish his control. He has been a minister in three successive governments (MVA, Mahayuti and Mahayuti 2.0) and guardian minister of Beed. Opposition leaders as well as elected representatives in Beed allege that Dhananjay’s bid to control the district politically has led to the current turmoil in the district. There have been allegations of grabbing land and properties, cornering all government contracts, extortion and murders against certain groups. Walmik Karad, a former head of Parli municipal council and a close aide of Dhananjay is accused of being a mastermind behind the murder of sarpanch Santosh Deshmukh. On Saturday, thousands of political workers and other people came out on the streets of Beed demanding arrest of Karad and sacking of Munde as a minister. Dhanajay’s boss and deputy chief minister Ajit Pawar as well as chief minister Devendra Fadnavis are increasingly finding it difficult to defend him as elected representatives from all parties including BJP and NCP are gunning for his head. Pawar is aware of the impact the current controversy is having on his and his party’s image. There is also a strong Maratha undertone in the case as Deshmukh was Maratha and Karad-Munde come from Vanjari caste in the Other Backward Classes (OBC) category. During Manoj Jarange Patil-led agitation for Maratha quota, Beed saw a bitter tussle between Maratha and Vanjari communities. According to NCP insiders, Pawar has not asked Dhananjay to step down but he is not stopping NCP leaders from Beed such as MLA Prakash Solanke from attacking the latter. The next few days could decide whether Dhananjay Munde manages to save his chair or is asked to take a step back, in the interest of his party and the Mahayuti government.

JPMorgan Chase & Co. Sells 722,130 Shares of Altria Group, Inc. (NYSE:MO)Qatar tribune Tribune News Network Doha Hamad Medical Corporation’s (HMC) Heart Hospital has expanded its use of surgical robots in coronary artery bypass grafting (Robotic CABG) surgeries. Robotic-assisted coronary artery bypass grafting surgeries aim to enhance natural blood flow to the heart muscle and offer a less invasive and more precise alternative to traditional procedures, enabling faster recovery and reducing the risk of complications for patients. The advanced surgeries are performed under the supervision of a specialised surgical team that includes Dr Abdulwahid Al Mulla, senior consultant and head of the Cardiothoracic Surgery Department at Heart Hospital, alongside Dr Ali Kindawi, consultant cardiothoracic Surgeon; Dr Mohamed Latif Wani, consultant cardiothoracic surgeon; and Dr Mohamed AlKahlout, specialist cardiothoracic surgeon. Dr Mulla said, “Heart Hospital has introduced minimally invasive techniques for coronary artery bypass and mitral valve surgeries to ensure the delivery of high-quality healthcare services to patients in Qatar and to remain at the forefront of global surgical advancements. This aligns with HMC’s Healthcare Strategy 2024-2030, the National Health Strategy 2024-2030, and Qatar National Vision 2030.” “Integrating advanced technologies like robotics into cardiothoracic surgeries significantly improves patient experience, shortens the patient’s recovery time, and minimises complications. Patients are carefully selected for these procedures based on their health status to ensure suitability for this type of surgery and optimal patient outcomes,” he added. Dr AlKahlout highlighted the significance of introducing robotics in coronary artery procedures. This procedure is performed through a small incision, no longer than six centimetres, on the left side of the chest, replacing the traditional sternotomy. However, other surgical steps, such as placing the patient on a heart-lung machine and temporarily stopping the heart, remain unchanged. He added that robotic-assisted cardiac surgeries reduce recovery times and hospital stays by approximately one-third compared to conventional open-heart procedures. Heart Hospital initially began performing coronary artery surgeries on a limited scale about 15 years ago, focusing on single-artery bypasses. However, with advancements in surgical techniques, particularly in early 2024, the hospital expanded to multi-artery procedures. “In 2024, we successfully treated over 10 cases involving more than one bypass. We aim to increase this number to 25 cases in 2025. It is important to highlight that this is an exceptionally advanced procedure, performed by only a handful of specialised centres worldwide, which places Heart Hospital among the leading medical institutions in the field of cardiothoracic surgery,” said Dr AlKahlout. TORONTO - Bruce Brown intercepted a pass and streaked down the court, driving past some token defence from Atlanta Hawks forward Jalen Johnson for a one-handed slam dunk. Brown’s Toronto Raptors teammates burst off the home team’s bench, cheering for the veteran forward. “It’s just because they didn’t think I can jump, because I haven’t jumped really, or they haven’t seen it, and then they didn’t see it the last year,” Brown said, adding he knew he would dunk as soon as he crossed half-court. “I told them I could do it and I was like, ‘if I get the chance to, I’mma dunk it.’” It was Brown’s first dunk in eight months as he scored 12 points and had three rebounds off the bench in his season debut on Sunday as Toronto lost to Atlanta 136-107. He’d missed the first 31 games of the Raptors season as he recovered from arthroscopic knee surgery on Sept. 20, a process that took longer than he expected. “I thought I was gonna be out like six to eight weeks but some things didn’t go my way,” said Brown. “There was a lot of swelling in there for a while. “Things happened, and then I was supposed to come back, like, three, four weeks ago, but there was still swelling there, so they told me to take my time.” Brown averaged 9.6 points, 3.8 rebounds, 2.7 assists, 0.7 steals and 0.3 blocks over 34 games with the Raptors last season. He was traded from the Indiana Pacers to Toronto on Jan. 18 as part of a package for all-star forward Pascal Siakam. He’s averaged 8.9 points, 4.2 rebounds and 2.5 assists over his career in 416 games with the Detroit Pistons, Brooklyn Nets, Denver Nuggets, Indiana and Toronto. Brown’s return doesn’t just add depth to the Raptors’ lineup, but brings some much-needed energy to a struggling team that has lost 10 in a row. “You see him get out there and put his body on the line after being out for so long,” said Scottie Barnes, who led Toronto with 19 points, eight rebounds, and five assists but eight turnovers in the loss. “He’s making himself so tired out there just guarding, pushing himself. That’s what the team needs. “We’ve all got to match that energy every single night. That’s the effort we’re going to need in order to win games.” Head coach Darko Rajakovic said that fatigue is a major factor in the NBA’s longest active losing skid. He said that a lack of focus played a role in Toronto’s season-high 31 turnovers on Sunday. “We hit a wall. We look tired. We look drained,” said Rajakovic. “Guys are not in a rhythm. That’s the reality that we’re in right now. We’ve got to find a way to get out of it.” It was the third consecutive game where the Raptors had given up over 130 points, and second 29-point blowout in a row. “Getting beat by 30, man, at home — that’s unacceptable,” said Barnes. “We can’t be doing that. We got to go out there and play harder, be smarter. “We had a lot of turnovers today. We can’t allow this to happen.” Brown was more optimistic. “We just need some rest, and we’ll push through it,” he said, noting that a stomach flu had spread through Toronto’s locker room. “I mean, all teams have this at some point, even championship teams, so we’ll push through it. We’ll be fine.” This report by The Canadian Press was first published Dec. 29, 2024.Maschmeyer's 34 saves carry Ottawa Charge past New York Sirens, 3-1

NoneNovember 23 - Sunday's showdown between the Philadelphia 76ers and visiting Los Angeles Clippers is not going to materialize in the way Paul George had hoped. After five seasons with the Clippers, George signed a four-year, $212 million deal with the Sixers in the offseason. However, the team has won only three times in its first 15 games with stars Joel Embiid, Tyrese Maxey and George all missing significant time due to injuries. Embiid continues to nurse a knee injury and will miss this matchup, while George (hyperextended knee) will not be available to face his former team. Meanwhile, the Clippers have been up-and-down this season while playing the entire campaign without two-way standout Kawhi Leonard (knee). Los Angeles opened the season 2-1 before losing three in a row. The team then won four straight, then lost three consecutive games and now has won four straight entering Sunday's opener of a four-game road trip. The Clippers announced over the weekend that Leonard would miss the entire trip, which puts more pressure on former Sixers guard James Harden, who is averaging 20.4 points, 7.6 rebounds and a team-high 8.8 assists. Norman Powell is the Clippers' leading scorer at 23.3 points per game. He will miss his third consecutive game with a hamstring issue. The Clippers won twice at home without Powell, including Friday's 104-88 triumph over the Sacramento Kings. Harden had 22 points to lead the way in that contest, while Ivica Zubac notched 10 points and 15 rebounds. "All games are meaningful for us," Clippers coach Tyronn Lue said after the win in NBA Cup play. "Playing for the Cup and having a chance to go to Vegas to play for the big money is always intriguing as well. But we got to play the same way every night, whether it's the Cup, whatever we are doing, being short-handed." After committing 22 turnovers in the victory over the Orlando Magic on Wednesday, the Clippers committed just 12 turnovers against the Kings. "We've just got to take care of the basketball," Lue said. That will be particularly important Sunday against a Philadelphia squad that forced 19 turnovers in Friday's 113-98 victory over the Brooklyn Nets. On the offensive end, rookie Jared McCain and All-Star guard Tyrese Maxey combined for 56 points as the Sixers snapped a five-game slide. "I ain't gonna lie, it felt good to win," Maxey said after shooting 11-of-17 for 26 points. "I'm not going to sit here and talk about making shots. We played so hard, offensively and defensively, (and) played together. Guys stuck together." McCain was caught on camera in the fourth quarter saying, "I'm Rookie of the Year." The guard finished with 30 points -- his seventh straight game with at least 20 points. "It's one of my goals for the season, obviously," McCain said, "but it was just that competitiveness coming out of me. I respect every other rookie in this league, but obviously I'm a believer in myself and so, yeah, some words definitely came out at that point." The teams met Nov. 6 in Los Angeles, where the Clippers posted a comfortable 110-98 victory behind 26 points from Powell. --Field Level Media Our Standards: The Thomson Reuters Trust Principles. , opens new tab
