Israeli strikes without warning in central Beirut kill at least 15 as diplomats push for cease-fire BEIRUT, Lebanon (AP) — Lebanese officials say Israeli airstrikes have killed at least 15 people and injured dozens in central Beirut, as the once-rare attacks on the heart of Lebanon’s capital continue without warning. Diplomats are scrambling to broker a cease-fire but say obstacles still remain. The current proposal calls for a two-month cease-fire during which Israeli forces would withdraw from Lebanon and Hezbollah would end its armed presence along the southern border south of the Litani River. Lebanon’s Health Ministry says Israeli attacks have killed more than 3,500 people in Lebanon in the months of fighting that have turned into all-out war. Trump raced to pick many Cabinet posts. He took more time to settle on a treasury secretary WASHINGTON (AP) — President-elect Donald Trump launched a blitz of picks for his Cabinet, but he took his time settling on billionaire investor Scott Bessent as his choice for treasury secretary. The Republican not only wanted someone who jibes with him, but an official who can execute his economic vision and look straight out of central casting while doing so. With his Yale University education and pedigree trading for Soros Fund Management before establishing his own funds, Bessent will be tasked with a delicate balancing act. Trump expects him to help reset the global trade order, enable trillions of dollars in tax cuts, ensure inflation stays in check, manage a ballooning national debt and still keep the financial markets confident. What to know about Scott Turner, Trump's pick for housing secretary President-elect Donald Trump has selected Scott Turner to lead the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. Turner is a former NFL player who ran the White House Opportunity and Revitalization Council during Trump’s first term. Turner, 52, is the first Black person selected to be a member of Trump's incoming Cabinet. Turner, who grew up in a Dallas, was a defensive back and spent nine seasons in the NFL beginning in 1995, playing for the Washington Redskins, San Diego Chargers and Denver Broncos. Turner joined the Texas House in 2013 as part of a large crop of tea party-supported lawmakers. He tried unsuccessfully to become speaker before he finished his second term in 2016. He did not seek a third term. Voters rejected historic election reforms across the US, despite more than $100M push JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) — Election reform advocates had hoped for a big year at the ballot box. That's because a historic number of states were considering initiatives for ranked choice voting or to end partisan primaries. Instead, voters dealt them big losses in the November elections. Voters in Arizona, Colorado, Idaho, Missouri, Montana, Nevada, Oregon and South Dakota all rejected proposed changes to their voting systems. In Alaska, a proposal to repeal ranked choice voting appears to have narrowly fallen short. The losses in many states came even though election reform supporters raised more than $100 million, easily outpacing opponents. Supporters say they aren't giving up but plan to retool their efforts. The week that upped the stakes of the Ukraine war KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — This past week has seen the most significant escalation in hostilities Ukraine has witnessed since Russia's full-scale invasion and marks a new chapter in the nearly three-year war. It began with U.S. President Joe Biden reversing a longstanding policy by granting Kyiv permission to deploy American longer-range missiles inside Russian territory and ended with Moscow striking Ukraine with a new experimental ballistic weapon that has alarmed the international community and heightened fears of further escalation. Storm dumps record rain in Northern California, while US Northeast deals with winter storms HEALDSBURG, Calif. (AP) — A major storm continues to drop heavy snow and record rain in California, causing small landslides and flooding some streets. Meanwhile, on the opposite coast, blizzard or winter storm warnings were in effect Saturday from parts of the Northeast to central Appalachia. The storm on the West Coast arrived in the Pacific Northwest earlier this week, killing two people and knocking out power to hundreds of thousands, before moving through Northern California. Forecasters predicted that both coasts would begin to see a reprieve from the storms as the system moves into eastern Canada and the one in the West heads south. Even with access to blockbuster obesity drugs, some people don't lose weight Most people taking popular drugs like Ozempic and Wegovy to lose weight have shed significant pounds. But obesity experts say that roughly 20% of patients — as many as 1 in 5 — may not see robust results with the new medications. The response to the drugs varies from person to person and can depend on genetics, hormones and differences in how the brain regulates energy. Undiagnosed medical conditions and some drugs can prevent weight loss. Experts say it can take experimentation to help so-called nonresponders find results. Fighting between armed sectarian groups in restive northwestern Pakistan kills at least 37 people PESHAWAR, Pakistan (AP) — A senior Pakistani police officer says fighting between armed sectarian groups in the country's restive northwest has killed at least 37 people. The overnight violence was the latest to rock Kurram, a district in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, and comes days after a deadly gun ambush killed 42 people. The officer said Saturday that armed men torched shops, houses and government property overnight. Gunfire is ongoing between rival tribes. Although Sunnis and Shiites generally live together peacefully in Pakistan, tensions remain in some areas, especially Kurram. Doctor at the heart of Turkey's newborn baby deaths case says he was a 'trusted' physician ISTANBUL (AP) — The Turkish doctor at the center of an alleged fraud scheme that led to the deaths of 10 babies says he was a “trusted” physician. Dr. Firat Sari is one of 47 people on trial accused of transferring newborn babies to neonatal units of private hospitals, where they were allegedly kept for prolonged and sometimes unnecessary treatments in order to receive social security payments. Sari said patients were referred to him because people trusted him and he did not bribe anyone involved with Turkey’s emergency medical phone line. Sari, said to be the plot’s ringleader, faces up to 583 years in prison. Hydrate. Make lists. Leave yourself time. And other tips for reducing holiday travel stress Travel, especially during the holiday season, can be stressful. But following some tips from the pros as you prepare for a trip can make for a smoother, less anxious experience. One expert traveler suggests making a list a week before you go of things you need to do and pack. Cross off each item as you complete it during the week. Another tip is to carry your comfort zone with you. That could mean noise-canceling headphones, playlists meant to soothe airport travelers, entertainment and snacks from home. Carry a change of clothes and a phone charger in case of delays. Stay hydrated. Leave extra time. And know your airline's rules. Downloading the airline's app can help with that.NEW YORK , Nov. 22, 2024 /PRNewswire/ -- Rosen Law Firm, a global investor rights law firm, announces the filing of a class action lawsuit on behalf of purchasers of common stock of Hasbro, Inc. Ireland’s premier has spoken to the Dublin woman who won a civil case against mixed martial arts fighter Conor McGregor to praise her courage. Taoiseach Simon Harris said he also wanted to tell Nikita Hand, a hair colourist from Drimnagh, that her case had prompted an increase in women coming forward to ask for support. Ms Hand, who accused the sportsman of raping her in a Dublin hotel in December 2018, won her claim against him for damages in a civil case at the High Court in the Irish capital on Friday. The total amount of damages awarded to Ms Hand by the jury was 248,603.60 euro (£206,714.31). Mr McGregor said in a post on social media on Friday that he intends to appeal against the decision. That post has since been deleted. Speaking to the media on Saturday, Mr Harris said he told Ms Hand of the support she has from people across Ireland. “I spoke with Nikita today and I wanted to thank her for her incredible bravery and her courage,” he said. “I wanted to make sure that she knew how much solidarity and support there was across this country for her bravery. “I also wanted to make sure she knew of what the Dublin Rape Crisis Centre had said yesterday – that so many other women have now come forward in relation to their own experiences of sexual abuse as a result of Nikita’s bravery.” The Dublin Rape Crisis Centre said the case has had a “profound effect” on the people the charity supports, and that over the first 10 days of the High Court case, calls to its national helpline increased by almost 20%. It said that first-time callers increased by 50% compared to the same period last year, and were largely from people who had experienced sexual violence who were distressed and anxious from the details of case and the views people had to it. Mr Harris said: “I wanted to speak with her and I wanted to wish her and her daughter, Freya, all the very best night, and I was very grateful to talk with Nikita today. “Her bravery, her courage, her voice has made a real difference in a country in which we must continue to work to get to zero tolerance when it comes to domestic, sexual and gender-based violence. “I don’t want to say too much more, because conscious there could be further legal processes, but I absolutely want to commend Nikita for her bravery, for her courage, for using her voice.” Justice Minister Helen McEntee praised Ms Hand’s bravery and said she had shown “there is light at the end of the tunnel”. She said: “I just want to commend Nikita for her bravery, for her determination and the leadership that she has shown in what has been – I’ve no doubt – a very, very difficult time for her and indeed, for her family. She added: “Because of wonderful people like Nikita, I hope that it shows that there is light at the end of the tunnel, that there are supports available to people, and that there is justice at the end of the day.” Ms Hand said in a statement outside court on Friday that she hoped her case would remind victims of assault to keep “pushing forward for justice”. Describing the past six years as “a nightmare”, she said: “I want to show (my daughter) Freya and every other girl and boy that you can stand up for yourself if something happens to you, no matter who the person is, and justice will be served.” During the case, Ms Hand said she was “disappointed and upset” when the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) decided not to prosecute the case after she made a complaint to the Irish police. In a letter to her in August 2020, the DPP said there was “insufficient evidence” and there was not a reasonable prospect of conviction. Ms Hand asked the DPP to review the decision, saying she felt she was being treated differently because one of the suspects was famous. Asked about the DPP’s decision not to prosecute, Mr Harris and Ms McEntee stressed the importance of the DPP’s independence on whether to prosecute. “There are obviously structures in place where the DPP can meet a victim and can outline to them their reasons for not taking the case,” Mr Harris said. “But there’s also always an opportunity for the DPP in any situation – and I speak broadly in relation to this – to review a decision, to consider any new information that may come to light, and I don’t want to say anything that may ever cut across the ongoing work of the DPP.” Ms McEntee stressed that there should “never be any political interference” in the independence of the DPP’s decisions. “I have, since becoming minister, given priority to and enabled a new office within the DPP to open specifically focused on sexual offences, so that this issue can be given the focus and the priority that it needs,” she said. The farmer's idea may have seemed unconventional, but he was determined to do whatever it took to ensure the well-being of his potatoes. And so, one by one, the small potatoes were carefully fitted with tiny cotton pants, each one tailored to fit snugly around their round bodies. The sight of the potatoes waddling around the farm in their miniature pants was both charming and endearing.

Hunter on Monday was named a finalist for the Heisman Trophy, the most prestigious individual award in college football. Hunter is looking to become the second player in Buffaloes history to win the Heisman after the late Rashaan Salaam in 1994. He's the fourth finalist in CU history, joining Salaam, Eric Bieniemy (1990) and Darian Hagan (1989). CU teammate Shedeur Sanders did not make the finalists cut. Joining Hunter are Boise State running back Ashton Jeanty, Oregon quarterback Dillon Gabriel and Miami quarterback Cam Ward. Hunter remains the overwhelming favorite on the betting markets. On offense, Hunter led the Buffs in catches (92), receiving yards (1,152) and receiving touchdowns (14), the last of which was a single-season program record. He ranked first, second and first in those three categories, respectively, in the Big 12 and was first-team all-conference at wide receiver. But the reason Hunter remains the favorite to win the award is because he was also first-team all-Big 12 at cornerback and was the league's Defensive Player of the Year after racking up 31 tackles, one for loss, four interceptions, 11 pass breakups and one forced fumble. Hunter appeared in all 12 regular season games during CU's 9-3 campaign but missed a full four quarters across two games. Colorado junior cornerback/wide receiver Travis Hunter celebrates a touchdown with his teammates during the second half of a game against Oklahoma State at Folsom Field on Friday, Nov. 29, 2024 (Stephen Swofford, Denver Gazette) The likely challenger to Hunter for the award is Jeanty, the Boise State star who led the Broncos to a Mountain West championship and the No. 3 seed in the College Football Playoff. The junior has put up numbers rivaled by the all-time great running backs in college football history. Through 13 games, Jeanty has 2,497 yards on over 7 yards per carry to go with 30 total touchdowns (29 rushing, 1 receiving). He is just 132 rushing yards away from breaking the single-season record set by Oklahoma State's Barry Sanders in 1988. Jeanty will get his chance to become the new single-season rushing king against either No. 6 Penn State or No. 11 SMU in the Fiesta Bowl on New Year's Eve. Boise State running back Ashton Jeanty reacts after scoring a touchdown during the second half of an NCAA college football game against San Jose State, Saturday, Nov. 16, 2024, in San Jose, Calif. (AP Photo/Godofredo A. Vásquez) Gabriel led the Ducks to the No. 1 overall seed in the CFP and a 13-0 record, which included a Big Ten championship in the program's first season in the conference. Through 13 games, he's thrown for 3,558 yards and 28 touchdowns while completing over 73% of his passes. Now in his sixth season of college football across three schools, Gabriel has thrown for over 18,000 passing yards and is fewer than 800 yards away from breaking Case Keenum's career passing record — a record he may set if Oregon makes it all the way to the national championship game on Jan. 20. If Hunter wins the Heisman, he'll become just the second defensive player to win the award and the first since Michigan cornerback Charles Woodson won it in 1997. Woodson is also the only current winner to have played significant snaps on both sides of the ball, but his offensive production was nowhere near Hunter's from this season. In 1997, Woodson had 11 catches for 231 yards and two touchdowns, to go with three carries for 15 yards and a touchdown on the ground — which is 81 catches, 921 yards and 12 total touchdowns fewer than Hunter. Woodson did serve as Michigan's primary punt returner, something Hunter did not do, and had 33 returns for 283 yards and a touchdown on special teams. Former LSU quarterback Jayden Daniels, now with the Washington Commanders, is the reigning Heisman winner. Former Alabama wide receiver DeVonta Smith is the last non-quarterback to win the award and the only non-quarterback or running back to win since Woodson. The Buffs made a strong push to get Sanders to join Hunter as a finalist for the Heisman. Hunter said his quarterback and close friend is invited regardless, but Sanders won't have an empty trophy case as he recently accepted the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award for the nation's top quarterback last weekend in Baltimore. Sanders is also a finalist for the Davey O'Brien Award, also given to the nation's best quarterback, and the winner will be announced at 7 p.m. Thursday during the 34th annual college football awards show on ESPN. Hunter is also a finalist for several awards announced that night, including the Maxwell Award for the overall player of the year, the Chuck Bednarik Award for the top defensive player and the Biletnikoff Award for the top wide receiver. On Monday, he was given the Lott IMPACT Trophy, which is given to the top defensive player in college football according to their athletic ability on the field and character off of it.Mini Motorways introduces Cairns in Down Under update
