Iran issues demarche to Swiss, Italian diplomats over US-ordered arrests of citizens

What a wonderful year 2024 has been for investors. U.S. stocks ripped higher and carried the S&P 500 to records as the economy kept growing and the Federal Reserve began cutting interest rates. The year featured many familiar winners, such as Big Tech, which got even bigger as their stock prices kept growing. But it wasn't just Apple, Nvidia and the like. Bitcoin, gold and other investments also drove higher. Here's a look at some of the numbers that defined the year. All are as of Dec. 20. Remember when President Bill Clinton got impeached or when baseball's Mark McGwire hit his 70th home run against the Montreal Expos? That was the last time the U.S. stock market closed out a second straight year with a leap of at least 20%, something the S&P 500 is on track to do again this year. The index has climbed 24.3% so far this year, not including dividends, following last year's spurt of 24.2%. The number of all-time highs the S&P 500 has set so far this year. The first came early, on Jan. 19, when the index capped a two-year comeback from the swoon caused by high inflation and worries that high interest rates instituted by the Federal Reserve to combat it would create a recession. But the index was methodical through the rest of the year, setting a record in every month outside of April and August, according to S&P Dow Jones Indices. The latest came on Dec. 6. The number of times the Federal Reserve has cut its main interest rate this year from a two-decade high, offering some relief to the economy. Expectations for those cuts, along with hopes for more in 2025, were a big reason the U.S. stock market has been so successful this year. The 1 percentage point of cuts, though, is still short of the 1.5 percentage points that many traders were forecasting for 2024 at the start of the year. The Fed disappointed investors in December when it said it may cut rates just two more times in 2025, fewer than it had earlier expected. That’s how many points the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose by the day after Election Day, as investors made bets on what Donald Trump’s return to the White House will mean for the economy and the world. The more widely followed S&P 500 soared 2.5% for its best day in nearly two years. Aside from bitcoin, stocks of banks and smaller winners were also perceived to be big winners. The bump has since diminished amid worries that Trump’s policies could also send inflation higher. The level that bitcoin topped to set a record above $108,000 this past month. It's been climbing as interest rates come down, and it got a particularly big boost following Trump's election. He's turned around and become a fan of crypto, and he's named a former regulator who’s seen as friendly to digital currencies as the next chair of the Securities and Exchange Commission, replacing someone who critics said was overly aggressive in his oversight. Bitcoin was below $17,000 just two years ago following the collapse of crypto exchange FTX. Gold's rise for the year, as it also hit records and had as strong a run as U.S. stocks. Wars around the world have helped drive demand for investments seen as safe, such as gold. It's also benefited from the Fed's cut to interest rates. When bonds are paying less in interest, they pull away fewer potential buyers from gold, which pays investors nothing. It's a favorite number of Elon Musk, and it's also a threshold that Tesla's stock price passed in December as it set a record. The number has a long history among marijuana devotees, and Musk famously said in 2018 that he had secured funding to take Tesla private at $420 per share. Tesla soared this year, up from less than $250 at the start, in part because of expectations that Musk's close relationship with Trump could benefit the company. That's how much revenue Nvidia made in the nine months through Oct. 27, showing how the artificial-intelligence frenzy is creating mountains of cash. Nvidia's chips are driving much of the move into AI, and its revenue through the last nine months catapulted from less than $39 billion the year before. Such growth has boosted Nvidia's worth to more than $3 trillion in total. GameStop’s gain on May 13 after Keith Gill, better known as “Roaring Kitty,” appeared online for the first time in three years to support the video game retailer’s stock, which he helped rocket to unimaginable heights during the “ meme stock craze ” in 2021. Several other meme stocks also jumped following his post in May on the social platform X, including AMC Entertainment. Gill later disclosed a sizeable stake in the online pet products retailer Chewy, but he sold all of his holdings by late October. That's how much the U.S. economy grew, at annualized seasonally adjusted rates, in each of the three first quarters of this year. Such growth blew past what many pessimists were expecting when inflation was topping 9% in the summer of 2022. The fear was that the medicine prescribed by the Fed to beat high inflation — high interest rates — would create a recession. Households at the lower end of the income spectrum in particular are feeling pain now, as they contend with still-high prices. But the overall economy has remained remarkably resilient. This is the vacancy rate for U.S. office buildings — an all-time high — through the first three quarters of 2024, according to data from Moody's. The fact the rate held steady for most of the year was something of a win for office building owners, given that it had marched up steadily from 16.8% in the fourth quarter of 2019. Demand for office space weakened as the pandemic led to the popularization of remote work. That's the total number of previously occupied homes sold nationally through the first 11 months of 2024. Sales would have to surge 20% year-over-year in December for 2024's home sales to match the 4.09 million existing homes sold in 2023, a nearly 30-year low. The U.S. housing market has been in a sales slump dating back to 2022, when mortgage rates began to climb from pandemic-era lows. A shortage of homes for sale and elevated mortgage rates have discouraged many would-be homebuyers.

Elon Musk proposed a billionaire project to create a transatlantic hypersonic tunnel between New York and London . This is an unprecedented work, with experimental technology, that would drastically reduce the travel time between the two cities. PUBLICIDAD The proposal has already sparked curiosity among investors, but there are also environmentalist detractors. PUBLICIDAD Although there are already tunnels and bridges with high-speed trains such as the Bullet Train and the Eurostar in Europe, Musk's proposal for a super-hypersonic transatlantic tunnel is unique in its class, as it would involve crossing the Atlantic Ocean. Heraldo USA reported that with the hypersonic tunnel, Elon Musk plans for travel between New York and London in 60 minutes with trains reaching speeds of up to 3,000 miles per hour (mph). The journey would cut eight hours off a flight . The billionaire offered his company, The Boring Company, to build the tunnel, which would have an estimated cost of 20 million dollars. He stated that it would strengthen the connection between America and Europe, which in turn would enhance the commercial and touristic aspects of both continents. What would the technology be like for the tunnel between New York and London proposed by Elon Musk? Heraldo USA explained that the innovative aspect of the hypersonic tunnel between New York and London, proposed by Elon Musk, "lies in the use of vacuum tubes that will revolutionize high-speed transportation with the 'hyperloop' concept, which involves creating a vacuum inside the tunnel, allowing trains to move without air resistance." Due to being an unprecedented project, there are several concerns, such as oceanic pressure, seismic risks, underwater conditions, as well as worries about it being an experimental ‘hyperloop’ technology; environmental impact on marine ecosystems and carbon emissions are also concerning. The story so far: A study of 432 convenience food products, in five categories — idli mixes, breakfast cereals, porridge mixes, beverage mixes, soup mixes — and extruded (‘puffed’ or ‘expanded’) snacks, has found that a majority of these ready-to-eat/packaged food products are high in carbohydrates. Also read | What the Food Safety and Standards Act says Who conducted the study? The study, ‘Assessment of front and back of pack nutrition labels of selected convenience food products and snacks available in the Indian market’ by Shobana Shanmugam et al, was published in Plos One . Researchers with Chennai-based Madras Diabetes Research Foundation, the Indian Council of Medical Research-National Institute of Nutrition and the University of Reading, the U.K. were involved. It aimed to evaluate the nutritional profiles and claims of selected convenience food products and snacks in the Indian market and also measured their healthiness by categorising them according to their nutrient profiles. The nutritional profiling of the foods was conducted based on the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) claims regulations, after evaluating the nutritional information on the front and back of pack labels of the selected food items. Only the nutritional content claims related to protein, dietary fibre, fat, sugar and cholesterol were evaluated in this study. The healthiness was assessed using a nutritional traffic light system. The products were classified into ‘healthy’, ‘moderately healthy’ and ‘less healthy’ based on the fat, saturated fat, and sugar content. The study was funded by the Department of Science and Technology. What did the study find? In essence, the study found that while most of the products could fall under the ‘healthy’ or ‘moderately healthy’ categories, except extruded snacks, most of the products provided over 70% of the energy from carbohydrates, while extruded snacks provided over 47% of the energy from fat. The energy distribution from protein was found to be less than 15%. All convenience food products that the study tested were rich in carbohydrate content. While beverage mixes had the highest carbohydrate content (35.5g to 95g/100g), extruded snacks had the highest total fat content (mean 28.3±7.5 g/100g), and the highest saturated fatty acid (SFA) content (mean 11.0±4.5 g/100g). The beverage mixes were found to be high in sugar content. The soup mixes had high sodium levels with poor protein and dietary fibre content. The idli mixes had high protein content and were largely sugar free. Breakfast cereals were found to have high dietary fibre. The study also found that despite FSSAI’s packaging and labelling regulations requiring products to display the minimum nutritional information for energy, protein, carbohydrate, sugar, and total fat as “per 100 g” or “100 ml” or “per serving” of the product on the label, only certain breakfast cereals and some beverages widely disclosed the concept of per-serving information. Further, some products that claimed to contain whole grains did not display them in the ingredient list and these claims may be misleading to the consumer, it noted. It pointed out that a clear labelling system would be a valuable tool for consumers to choose healthier products. What are the issues around food labelling? For years, activists have been advocating for front-of-pack labelling that has warning labels indicating high fat, sugar and sodium. “We want the warning labels to be specific, so, for instance, a customer with hypertension can avoid food labelled as ‘high sodium’ or a customer with diabetes can avoid high sugar foods,” said Vandana Prasad, a public health professional associated with the Public Health Resource Network. Lead author of the paper and senior scientist at Madras Diabetes Research Foundation Dr. Shanmugam said the present labelling system was not uniform, and customers could find it hard to understand. “Nutrition labelling in India is at an evolving stage and evidence of awareness and understanding of these labels by the Indian population is limited,” the study notes. How are changing diet patterns affecting health? As per the household consumption expenditure survey 2022-23, Indians are now spending more on processed food, beverages, and refreshments while reducing money spent on home-cooked food. Though there are subtle variations in rural and urban areas, the pattern is valid across both regions. Experts have highlighted this changing diet is a huge contributing factor to the staggering burden of non-communicable diseases in the country. The Economic Survey of India this year, citing the Indian Council of Medical Research’s dietary guidelines, noted that 56.4% of the total disease burden in India is due to unhealthy diets. Not only do excessive carbohydrates in the diet place a strain on the pancreas, therefore increasing one’s risk for type 2 diabetes, but other chemicals in processed food can increase the risk of ailments such as fatty liver as well, said Nihal Thomas, senior professor, Department of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism, Christian Medical College, Vellore. Dr. Shanmugam underlined the need for reformulation of packaged/processed food items to ensure they contain more proteins, alongside less fat and sodium. R.M. Anjana, managing director of Dr. Mohan’s Diabetes Specialities Centre, Chennai, who was also part of the study, reiterated the importance of reading food labels and avoiding processed food as much as possible. Candidates across party lines felt football could also be a game-changer in the political match this time. Residents of narrow, clogged lanes in this 200-year-old Cantonment town consider soccer a way of life that is intertwined in their livelihood. A lost playground can be a question of life and death. Amid claims of higher doles, loan waivers, or fervent calls of unity, almost every candidate in the fray in Kamptee promised a new football ground if voted to power. So much is their love for football that it became a poll promise this time, a hyperlocal entry in election manifestos, something unheard elsewhere in India's political dust bowl. Entry to the ground in the very Cantonment, where generations of Kamptee residents grew up playing from colonial days, has been restricted by the Army since Covid pandemic. As this has left soccer lovers gasping and grimacing, politicians thought of cashing in on their passion for the game. Prior to that entry to the ground was not restricted and it would be full of different teams. Now the number of entries has been limited and around 70 passes issued based on police verification. The passes have to be renewed periodically, said the locals. "This has always been a class A defence land, and the Army reserves the right to entry. The football players are being allowed access to the ground only after due permissions. Even the locals may claim of a free entry, this has always been the rule," the Army replied through defence PRO's office here. Congress' Suresh Bhoyar, who lost the elections to state BJP chief Chandrashekhar Bawankule, took a blistering shot at the latter. A sports complex was sanctioned away at Koradi, where Bawankule has followers. The location is within the same assembly constituency, but a ground is a necessity close to Kamptee town, he says. "I will continue with the fight for a football ground," he says. Locals say even though BJP did not officially have the football ground promise in its agenda, many party workers promised it when they met people during campaigning. The townspeople boast that the first-ever goal by any team in independent India was scored by a player from Kamptee. He was Mushtaq Ahmed, known as Mushtaq Kaptan (Captain). He did it by dodging none other than the famed Soviet goalkeeper Lev Yashin — the Black Spider, say the people here. The then Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, who saw the match, congratulated him personally, is the story everyone narrates in Kamptee. However, love for football here dates back beyond Ahmed's times or even the 94-year-old Rabbani Club. Locals say British soldiers who came here in the early 1820s and established a Cantonment, introduced the game to natives. Years down the line, football for Kamptee became what cricket would be for most of the country. In 1930, Syed Hussain Rabbani, a philanthropist, started the Rabbani School in the town. With it, the Rabbani Club, the first football club, began. And soon, over two dozen clubs mushroomed in the town. "Just see," says Shakeeb Ur Rehman, a member of the Kamptee Municipal Council, as he stops passersby standing in a narrow lane. He asks them if they have played football. "Yes, centre forward, right out, left out, goalkeeper, all-rounder," comes the answer. From engineers, traders to professionals, everyone stops to acknowledge "Football is the lifeline for people at Kamptee, but everything has changed since the ground was taken away. Now, only players of Rabbani Club have entry to the Cantonment ground for whom passes are issued. It's not just Rabbani; there are many teams in Kamptee," says Rehman stating Kamptee has produced many national and state-level players. Rabbani may be what Mohun Bagan is for Kolkata, but there are many other clubs. "The list is endless: Ansar Club, Noor ul Islam, Gulfam, Bharat, Iqbal Sporting, Ehbab, Guncha-e-Islam, and many more," counts an enthusiast. Certainly, majority players are Muslims, but there have been many famed players from other communities too, said one of them. "One should understand what makes football so important here. Most got jobs under the sports quota because of the game. They are employed at the AG's office, railways, police, Coal India Limited (CIL), and so on. We may not have new players if there's no ground to practice and play," says Mohd Asif, a veteran and an AG office employee. Railway employee and goalkeeper Ishrat Ahmed also owes his job to football. "I could make it to the national team. Kamptee has many football stars. I remember an occasion when a player was showered with gifts more than what he got in his dowry or the match-winning prize. The whole town flocked to witness the carnival," he says. Rehman says an alternate site near Dragon Temple was chosen when Sunil Kedar was minister of sports during MVA regime. It was challenged in court by Sulekatai Kumbhare, a former MLA. An accommodation for visitors to the temples has been approved there, Kumbhare told TOI. A site was proposed near the weavers' colony, but it remains frozen. A ground is proposed at Gada, 4km away, but locals find it far too, says Rehman. Close to Rabbani School, 80-year-old Kamiluddin says it was the Army that would invite local players for matches. Their Army Postal Service (APS) team made tough rivals. Senior Army officers used to be chief guests at the events. Maqsood Ahmed, son of Mushtaq Kaptan, claims it was an Army Colonel who spotted his father's talent at the same ground and engaged him to train soldiers. "It was because of the Army that people of Kamptee learnt to play football. Now, the military authorities have curbed entry," says Rehman. An ageing bridge links the Kamptee town to Cantonment ground. Less than a stone's throw, the ground remains out of bounds for many now, he says. Residents now plan to meet Bawankule with the request. Back at the square, the mention of football lights up old men's eyes as they call out veterans' names. "You'll find a captain in every house here," says a man in his eighties, boasting of his football skills. "Why is our staple food snatched away from us? We just need space to play," he says. According to Badawi, the Industrial Strategy Team at MoCIIP has begun organising workshops with these authorities to familiarise them with details, objectives and implementation plans of the initiatives. The focus is on establishing new industries with advanced technologies, fostering entrepreneurship and innovation, and improving governance and industrial development management. He also explained that MoCIIP is working closely with governance committees and relevant authorities to ensure that efforts to localise jobs align with the goals of the National Employment Programme. This is being achieved through the Tawteen platform with the aim of meeting employment targets across various economic sectors. The ministry’s strategy emphasises utilisation of educational and professional qualifications and attracting skilled national talent. As the holiday season approaches, Taylor Swift’s makeup artist, Lorrie Turk , has revealed her favorite beauty gifts, offering fans a chance to recreate the superstar’s radiant look. Netflix. Netflix is reportedly pulling out all the stops for its two Christmas Day NFL games, including a pre-game performance by Mariah Carey singing "All I Want for Christmas is You." According to a report by news agency AP, however, there is anxiety. For, the steaming giant recognizes that technical difficulties could ruin the experience. As Netflix executive Brandon Riegg, VP of nonfiction series and sports, told AP, that the memory of the streaming issues encountered during the Jake Paul-Mike Tyson fight on November 14 is mit fresh. Riegg, while addressing the concerns about Netflix's readiness for a potentially record-breaking viewership, added with a caution that the sheer volume of viewers for the fight overwhelmed the system, despite extensive pre-event testing. While acknowledging the issues experienced by some viewers, Riegg emphasized that the event served as a crucial stress test, leading to numerous system improvements. "The sheer tonnage of people that came to watch was incredible. And for all the testing that the engineering team had done ahead of that, and I think they’re the best in the business, the only way to test something of that magnitude is to have something of that magnitude,” Riegg said. “We never want to have technical issues or a disappointing experience for our members. There was a subset of people that were watching that struggled with that and we acknowledge that. The good news is they stress-tested the system to such a degree that there’s a lot of these fixes and improvements that they realized that they could make, and they’re applying all that stuff.” NFL streaming schedule on Netflix Netflix will stream two games on Christmas Day: the Pittsburgh Steelers vs. Kansas City Chiefs, preceded by a two-hour pregame show starting at 11 a.m. EST, and the Baltimore Ravens vs. Houston Texans at 4:30 p.m. EST. These games will be available to Netflix's 282.3 million subscribers in over 190 countries, marking the first global distribution of an NFL game by a single outlet. This marks the first year of a three-year deal, with Netflix also streaming one game each in 2025 and 2026, at a cost of $150 million for this year's package. While a full season package doesn't align with Netflix's strategy, the Christmas Day games presented a unique opportunity. What make NFL streaming on Netflix BIG This move signals Netflix's broader ambition to become a major destination for sports fans, evidenced by its recent acquisition of U.S. rights for the 2027 and 2031 FIFA Women’s World Cup and its upcoming partnership with WWE, beginning January 6th with "Monday Night Raw." The Tyson-Paul fight drew a global audience of 60 million, peaking at 65 million concurrent streams (38 million in the U.S.). However, Down Detector reported nearly 85,000 viewer complaints of outages and streaming problems leading up to the fight. This contrasts with previous benchmarks for streamed NFL games: 23 million viewers on Peacock for last season's AFC wild card game and 17.3 million on Amazon Prime Video for a regular-season game. The NFL's decision to schedule games on Christmas, despite it falling on a Wednesday, is reportedly driven by the potential for increased viewership. Last year's three Christmas games averaged 28.68 million viewers. The league approved two Christmas games in March, prompting Netflix's interest. Their existing relationship with the NFL through series like "Quarterback" and "Receiver" facilitated the deal.ATLANTA , Dec. 19, 2024 /PRNewswire/ -- APCU/Center Parc Credit Union (APCU/Center Parc) is excited to announce an agreement with MarkIII (MKIII) to enhance credit access for its members. Revealed: The star tipped to take over Ray Hadley as 2GB 'scrambles to fill his morning slot' By MARY MRAD FOR DAILY MAIL AUSTRALIA Published: 23:04 GMT, 7 December 2024 | Updated: 23:09 GMT, 7 December 2024 e-mail View comments A former sports star has been tipped to replace Ray Hadley on 2GB after he announced he was hanging up his mic for good in December . Mark Levy is the most likely candidate to step into the morning radio role as the station scrambles to fill the spot before Christmas, according to The Daily Telegraph . Levy has filled in for Hadley on several occasions and has also been enlisted to fill in over the summer. He kicked off his radio career as an ABC commentator on rugby league matches in the 1980s after retiring from the sport. 'Levy is in the box seat to replace Hadley with filling in over summer acting like an audition for him,' one source told the publication. Channel Nine's Chris O'Keefe, radio veteran Jason Morrison and afternoon presenter Michael McLaren are also in the running for the role. Hadley will sign-off from his top-rating morning show for the final time on December 13 despite having about two years left to run on his multimillion-dollar deal at Nine. He is in secret talks to switch to a full-time television role with a rival network after he wraps up his impressive career at Nine. Daily Mail Australia exclusively revealed the veteran broadcaster met with executives at Sky News Australia within hours of announcing his retirement from Nine's flagship 2GB station live on-air last month. Sources said Hadley arrived at news channel's Sydney HQ for the covert chat after most of the broadcaster's staffers had already headed home for the day. He then spent more than an hour in deep conversation with the News Corp-owned network's chief executive, Paul Whittaker, and head of programs, Mark Calvert. Sky News Australia insiders said the network was determined to lure the award-winning broadcaster - and his loyal audience - to the political news channel, with Whittaker personally rolling at the red carpet for the potential marquee signing. Although it is understood Hadley's contract precludes him from appearing on a rival radio network, sources said he could be free to join Sky News Australia under the terms of the agreement as the television channel does not directly compete with Nine Radio. Sources said Hadley's strong political views actually meant he had long been more in step with Sky News Australia's sensibilities than those of Nine and would be a natural fit for the network. On the day Hadley announced his retirement, he aired an extended conversation with Sky News reporter Peter Stefanovic about the US election ahead of a similar chat with his Nine colleague, and Stefanovic's brother, Karl. There are suggestions the potential deal could also see the rugby league commentating great continue calling football games for Fox Sports.
