TEHRAN – In his third and latest video message to the Iranian people in 15 months, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu claimed a desire for “peace”, but said the Iranian government is obstructing it. He alleged that Iran's leaders aim to “conquer other nations” while Israel is seeking only to “defend our state”. Netanyahu's previous address to the Iranian people preceded the October 26th Israeli airstrikes on military installations inside Iran, which resulted in the martyrdom of four Iranian Army personnel and one civilian. Analysts believe the strikes fell short of their intended destructive capacity due to Iran's effective air defenses, preventing Israeli fighter jets from entering Iranian airspace and precluding the execution of subsequent planned phases of the attack. The Israeli prime minister made no mention of the October assault in his Thursday address but said Israel has managed to crush Iran’s allied forces in Syria, Gaza, and Lebanon. “All this came as President Trump pointed out this week, because of Israel and its fighting success.” It's hard to label Israel's deadly campaigns in Gaza and Lebanon as successful. The stated goal – the "eradication" of Hamas and Hezbollah – remains a distant dream. State health officials published a list of retailers in Los Angeles County that sold raw milk that has since been recalled after a retail sample of the product tested positive for bird flu virus. No one has reported illnesses from the lot of raw milk produced by Fresno-based dairy Raw Farm, the California Department of Public Health said. The dairy issued a voluntary recall of the lot — which was produced on Nov. 9 and has an expiration date of Nov. 27 — after Santa Clara health officials detected bird flu virus in a sample of raw milk purchased from a retail store. Officials with the California Animal Health and Food Safety Laboratory System then tested and verified the results. Retailers that sold the impacted quart and half gallon sized fluid raw milk in L.A. County include: Officials may confirm more retailers as the investigation continues. The County of Santa Clara Public Health Laboratory has been testing raw milk from retail stores as a “second line of consumer protection,” the state health department said. Mark McAfee, the owner of Raw Farm, said every lot that has been tested by the company and the California Department of Food and Agriculture showed negative results for bird flu virus. Raw Farm alerted retailers to remove products from the impacted lot from their shelves and said consumers can return the product at stores for a replacement or refund. The state Department of Public Health said it is warning consumers from drinking any potentially contaminated raw milk from the affected lot because of the ongoing spread of bird flu in dairy cows and poultry as well as some cases that have infected people . “This is a very contentious time,” for raw milk, McAfee said. “I just know that there’s a grandly elevated political environment with RFK Jr. now wanting more raw milk for people in America,” he said. In the Senate, deeply skeptical lawmakers sought more information about Justice Department and congressional investigations into sex trafficking allegations involving underage girls, which Gaetz has denied. As Gaetz sought to lock down Senate support, concern over the sex trafficking allegations showed no signs of abating. In recent days, an attorney for two women said his clients told House Ethics Committee investigators that Gaetz paid them for sex on multiple occasions beginning in 2017, when Gaetz was a Florida congressman. One of the women testified she saw Gaetz having sex with a 17-year-old at a party in Florida in 2017, according to the attorney, Joel Leppard. Leppard has said that his client testified she didn’t think Gaetz knew the girl was underage, stopped their relationship when he found out and did not resume it until after she turned 18. The age of consent in Florida is 18. "They’re grateful for the opportunity to move forward with their lives,” Leppard said Thursday of his clients. “They’re hoping that this brings final closure for all the parties involved.” Gaetz has vehemently denied any wrongdoing. The Justice Department’s investigation ended last year with no charges against him. Gaetz’s political future is uncertain. He had abruptly resigned his congressional seat upon being selected as attorney general, a move seen as a way to shut down the ethics investigation into sexual misconduct allegations. He did win reelection in November for the new Congress, which convenes Jan. 3, 2025, but he said in his resignation letter last week to House Speaker Mike Johnson that he did not intend to take the oath of office. He transmitted a similar letter to Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis as the state launched a special election process to fill the vacancy. Republicans on the House Ethics Committee declined this week to release the panel's findings, over objections from Democrats in a split vote. But the committee did agree to finish its work and is scheduled to meet again Dec. 5 to discuss the matter. As word of Gaetz's decision spread across the Capitol, Republican senators seemed divided. Oklahoma Sen. Markwayne Mullin, who served with Gaetz in the House, called it a “positive move." Maine Sen. Susan Collins said Gaetz “put country first and I am pleased with his decision.” Others said they had hoped Gaetz could have overhauled the department. Florida Sen. Rick Scott, a close ally of Trump, said he was “disappointed. I like Matt and I think he would have changed the way DOJ is run.” Kentucky Sen. KUCHING (Dec 14): Progressive Democratic Party (PDP) senior vice-president Dato Sri Wong Soon Koh wants students to be equipped with the 3Cs – ‘Concept’, ‘Competence’, and ‘Connection’. “Concept means ideas, knowledge, and skills, which you need in facing your future tasks and doing them well,” he said when officiating at SMK Batang Igan’s ‘Student Excellence Award Ceremony’ yesterday. “Competence is when you have the necessary knowledge and skills that allow you to do things in the most successful way. “Connection is being able to connect yourself with capable people and successful organisations or groups using the necessary ideas, knowledge and skills, enabling yourself to do things better and more competently,” he said, adding that this 3C concept could be applied in any form of human endeavour. The Bawang Assan assemblyman also highlighted that the government has offered many incentives to students who are willing to study hard. For instance, the Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) government is offering free education starting 2026 to deserving students in five state-owned colleges and universities, he pointed out. “For us in the Central Region of Sarawak, we have Laila Taib College and the University of Technology Sarawak. I thus hope many of you here will succeed in pursuing your tertiary studies.” Adding on, Wong advised the students to ‘have a self to live with, a belief to hold, and a mission to achieve’ in order to make life worth-living. “You must consider yourself as an important person and do something successful so that you can make others, especially your parents, proud. “You need to have faith in yourself and confidence in doing whatever you want to do. Life must have a purpose, a direction, goals, and a mission. Only then can you succeed in life. “Let us all strive hard for a better future not only for ourselves, but also for our parents and our country, especially since 2024 is almost over,” he said. Commenting further, Wong encouraged the students to go for continuous learning. “Succeeding only this term or this year is not enough. You must consistently excel every year throughout your studies. “For those who have not succeeded, do not give up and make sure you start working harder so that you can achieve success in the future. “As a growing student, you must excel academically, as well as be healthy and strong physically, morally, and emotionally. A healthy body and mind are important to face life challenges when you work in the larger community after leaving the protected school community,” he said. Wong also praised SMK Batang Igan principal Mackinna Melodie Johnny for her role in managing the school well. “The parents of the schoolchildren are very grateful to her and thank her for the job well done.” In a separate occasion in Sibu yesterday, Wong presented a minor rural project (MRP) cheque to chieftan TR Abell to support his longhouse’s two-day 70th anniversary celebration. But the Taliban government has crushed this ambition by ordering, according to multiple sources, the exclusion of Afghan women from medical training, sparking panic across institutions. When she heard the news, Saja, who had been at university before women were barred, said it felt like “reliving the same nightmare”. “This was my last hope to do something, to become something,” said Saja, not her real name. “Everything has been taken away from us for the crime of being a girl.” The authorities have made no official comment or confirmation, nor have they responded to the numerous condemnations and calls to reverse a decision that further blocks women’s access to education. Since their 2021 return to power, the Taliban government has imposed reams of restrictions on women, making Afghanistan the only country to ban girls from education after primary school. Directors and employees of health training centres have told AFP they were informed in recent days of the order, issued by the Taliban supreme leader and passed down verbally by the health ministry, to expel women students until further notice. Institutes across the country — which many women had turned to after the university ban — were given a few days to organise final exams. But without an explicit announcement or document clarifying the rules, confusion reigns. Some institutions told AFP they would operate as normal until they received written orders, while others closed immediately or scrambled to hold exams before shuttering. “Everyone is confused, and no one is sharing what is really happening,” said Saja, who was in her first year at a private institute. “We have been given two or three exams each day... even though we already finished our exams a few months back,” said the 22-year-old, adding they had to pay fees to sit the exams. 35,000 women students “We received a lot of concerned messages from students and teachers wanting to know what is going on and asking ‘is there any hope?’” said the director of a Kabul private institute with 1,100 students, of which 700 were women. “No one is happy,” he told AFP from his office steps away from women’s classrooms, where the last lesson on the board advised how to manage stress and depression in patients. According to a source within the health ministry, 35,000 women are currently students in some 10 public and more than 150 private institutes offering two-year diplomas in subjects including nursing, midwifery, dentistry and laboratory work. The Norwegian Afghanistan Committee (NAC) non-governmental organisation, which trains 588 women in institutes managed in collaboration with the health ministry, was verbally informed classes were “temporarily suspended”. This has to be taken “equally seriously as a written document”, said NAC country director Terje Magnusson Watterdal, adding that “there are a lot of people high up within the current government that are quite opposed to this decision”. He hopes, at the minimum, public institutes will reopen to women. International organisations like the United Nations, which has said Afghan women are victims of a “gender apartheid”, have already warned of devastating consequences of the plan, in a country where maternal and infant mortality are among the world’s highest. If implemented, the reported new ban “will undoubtedly lead to unnecessary suffering, illness, and possibly deaths of Afghan women and children, now and in future generations, which could amount to femicide”, UN experts warned Monday. ‘Taken everything from us’ Midwifery students are especially passionate about their studies, according to Magnusson Watterdal. “So many of these young women have been motivated to become a midwife because they have lost a mother or an aunt or a sister in childbirth,” he said. “It’s not just a profession that you choose, it’s a vocation.
