The San Francisco 49ers picked up a much-needed win on Sunday, as the team took down the Chicago Bears with a final score of 38-13. Despite the big win, one player who did not make much of an impact was star wide receiver Deebo Samuel. More news: Former Texans Star CB Ends Retirement to Join Chiefs It appears Samuel understands his recent slump, but has used it as a chance to seemingly take a shot at the 49ers. Not struggling at all just not getting the ball!!!!!!! 🤷🏾♂️ Samuel took to X to vent his frustrations over his recent targets, as his post states: "Not struggling at all just not getting the ball!!!!!!! 🤷🏾♂️." There is no telling what caused Samuel to state that he isn't struggling, but has not been given the chance for more receptions. That has certainly been proven true in the last three games, as he has accounted for 12 total targets. Dating back to the game against the Green Bay Packers, Samuel was targeted only four times, bringing in one grab for 21 yards. The week after, the 49ers faced off against the Buffalo Bills, and Samuel was targeted five times, only catching four of those balls for 20 yards. In the 49ers' win on Sunday against the Bears, Samuel's targets dropped to three, and he caught two of those targets for 22 yards. It could be that Samuel is not getting targets simply because his YAC (yards after catch) have not been anywhere near where they usually are. It could also be that the 49ers have been trying to evolve their offense in a way that benefits the over-the-middle type of plays that tight end George Kittle is often successful with. Either way, it appears the 49ers have chosen not to involve Samuel nearly as much, and he is making that known on social media. It is a bit strange that his targets have gone down, especially with fellow receiver Brandon Aiyuk lost for the season. To be fair, Jauan Jennings has stepped up in a big way and could be the core reason why Samuel is not garnering more attention in the passing game. Jennings caught all seven of the eight targets thrown his way for 90 yards and two touchdowns. More news: 49ers HC Kyle Shanahan Offers Huge Injury Update on Isaac Guerendo Jennings also secured three catches for 55 yards in Week 13's loss to the Bills. Jennings might just be the better options at receiver for Brock Purdy and the 49ers. Still, the 49ers will need to turn things around for a run at the playoffs, and that means involving Samuel far more. He is still one of the best dual-threat receivers in the NFL . Yubo, which bills itself as a “live social discovery platform,” has released a new case study showing how they have achieved “100 percent age verification globally – for all users” using tech from . says it uses group livestreaming, messaging, and an intuitive swipe feature to create social communities. Since its founding in France in 2015 as Yellow, the company has amassed 80 million downloads and is used in more than 140 countries. Its target audience is Gen Z, typically considered to be those born after 1997. For social media platforms, skewing young increasingly means contending with , as legislators globally try to curb the proven ways in which social media harms youth. The most high-profile case to date is in Australia, where regulators have passed an banning users under 16 from using most social media platforms. In Yubo’s case, there are added stakes. The platform separates users into different “communities” based on age, meaning there’s added incentive to make sure teenage users don’t end up interacting with grizzled men in their 60s – especially when Ofcom says one third of children have lied about their date of birth to be registered as over 18 when accessing . That’s probably why Yubo operates on the principle of safety-by-design. The case study says “the app has a notable track record of rolling out innovative features and policies proactively to mitigate risks and enhance the user experience.” Yoti’s facial age estimation plays a big role in mitigating risk. Integrated with Yubo , it works a bit differently than your standard age estimation scheme (for example, one that guesses a user is over 18 and therefore allowed to access ). In Yubo’s case, users provide a date of birth on sign-up, and Yoti’s analyzes a live in-app selfie video to determine whether the face matches the declared age. Basically, the tool makes sure people are as old as they say they are. That said, it is also an effective age gate, thanks to the high accuracy of Yoti’s facial age estimation across age groups – including whether someone is under or over 13, the legally required age to use Yubo. To date, Yoti has performed more than 290 million for Yubo. The firm says around 87 percent of people are able to successfully verify their age at first attempt. If Yoti can’t find a match in comparing a selfie to a birth date, it moves on to further measures, which can include providing a new live image for review by a Yubo safety specialist. The caution is paying off, both in terms of safety and user satisfaction. The firm claims an October 2024 survey shows that more than 79 percent of Yubo users say they feel more safe on Yubo compared to other social platforms because of the app’s measures. More than 60 percent say age estimation has “a positive impact on their overall user experience on the app.” Beyond being secure in the knowledge that no one is lying about their age, the live video requirement for Yoti’s facial has helped Yubo reduce the number of bots and fake accounts by confirming every account belongs to a real person. Yubo says establishing facial age estimation requirements platform-wide makes it the first social app in the world to have age assurance for 100 percent of its users. It attributes its growth in part to how it puts trust at the center of the user experience, noting how age estimation boosts user engagement and retention by prioritizing safety, trust and satisfaction. Yubo CEO Sacha Lazimi says he is “proud that Yubo’s continued growth after almost a decade in the highly competitive landscape of social apps can stand as a symbol of our philosophy that user safety needs and business objectives do not have to be at odds with one another.” Yoti, meanwhile, announced in a recent blog that it has reached the milestone of for its Digital ID apps. The takeaway message from Yubo and Yoti’s partnership is that, while age assurance measures are often seen as a necessity forced on businesses by draconian looking to stifle growth, they can actually provide firms with strategic advantages. According to Juniper Research, experts have predicted that the number of checks will surpass 70 billion by the end of 2024. Perhaps age assurance is destined to be the Alligator Pear of the twenty-first century: distrusted at first as a little unappealing, but soon embraced everywhere as that versatile and beloved staple, the . | | | | | | |None
NEW YORK — A Marine veteran who used a chokehold on an agitated subway rider was acquitted on Monday in a death that became a prism for differing views about public safety, valor and vigilantism. A Manhattan jury cleared Daniel Penny of criminally negligent homicide in Jordan Neely’s 2023 killing. A more serious manslaughter charge was dismissed last week because the jury deadlocked on that count. Both applause and anger erupted in the courtroom as the verdict was read, and Neely’s father and two supporters were ushered out after audibly reacting. Another person also left, wailing with tears. “It really, really hurts,” Neely’s father, Andre Zachery, said outside the courthouse. “I had enough of this. The system is rigged.” Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg, the Democrat whose office brought the case, said prosecutors “followed the facts and the evidence from beginning to end” and respect the verdict. There was no immediate comment from lawyers for Penny, who rushed to a waiting car after the verdict. Penny’s attorneys claimed he was protecting himself and other subway passengers from a volatile, mentally ill man who made alarming remarks and gestures. The case amplified many American fault lines, among them race, politics, crime, urban life, mental illness and homelessness. Neely was Black. Penny is white. There were sometimes dueling demonstrations outside the courthouse, including Monday, when chants could be heard through the window ahead of the verdict. Penny, 26, served four years in the Marines and went on to study architecture. Neely, 30, was a sometime subway performer with a tragic life story: His mother was killed and stuffed in a suitcase when he was a teenager. As a younger man, Neely did Michael Jackson tributes on the city’s streets and subways. But Neely also struggled with mental illness after losing his mother, whose boyfriend was convicted of murdering her. He subsequently was diagnosed with depression and schizophrenia and was repeatedly hospitalized. Neely told a doctor in 2017 that being homeless, living in poverty and having to “dig through the garbage” for food made him feel so hopeless that he sometimes thought of killing himself, hospital records show. Trump says he'll nominate Kash Patel as FBI director to remake the agency. Here's what happens nextBerlin confirmed plans to reform its legal framework make it a clear criminal offence to “facilitate the smuggling of migrants to the UK” as part of the agreement, the Home Office said. The Home Office said the move would give German prosecutors more tools to tackle the supply and storage of dangerous small boats. Both countries will also commit to exchange information that may help to remove migrant-smuggling content from social media platforms and tackle end-to-end routes of criminal smuggling networks as part of the deal. It comes ahead of the UK and Germany hosting the so-called Calais Group in London, which sees ministers and police from the two countries, alongside France, Belgium and the Netherlands, gather to discuss migration in Europe. Delegates are expected to agree a detailed plan to tackle people-smuggling gangs in 2025 at the meeting on Tuesday. Home Secretary Yvette Cooper said: “For too long organised criminal gangs have been exploiting vulnerable people, undermining border security in the UK and across Europe while putting thousands of lives at risk. “We are clear that this cannot go on. “Germany is already a key partner in our efforts to crack down on migrant smuggling, but there is always more we can do together. “Our new joint action plan with deliver a strengthened partnership with Germany, boosting our respective border security as we work to fix the foundations, and ultimately saving lives.” Nancy Faeser, German federal minister of the interior said: “We are now stepping up our joint action to fight the brutal activities of international smugglers. “This is at the core of our joint action plan that we have agreed in London. “It will help us end the inhumane activities of criminal migrant smuggling organisations. “By cramming people into inflatable boats under threats of violence and sending them across the Channel, these organisations put human lives at risk.” She said that “many of these crimes are planned in Germany” and the deal would help to counter “this unscrupulous business with even more resolve.” “This includes maintaining a high investigative pressure, exchanging information between our security authorities as best as possible, and persistently investigating financial flows to identify the criminals operating behind the scenes,” Ms Faeser said. Shadow home secretary Chris Philp said the announcement “doesn’t go far enough”. “The British public deserves a serious plan to control our borders and stop criminal gangs,” he said. “The National Crime Agency has said a deterrent is necessary to reduce the number of crossings, yet Labour scrapped the only deterrent before it even got started. “Meanwhile the numbers of illegal immigrants coming here continue to climb, with an 18% increase compared to the same period last year, with more than 20,000 people having made the crossing since the election.”Donald Trump will ring the New York Stock Exchange bell as he's named Time's Person of the Year
Free-flowing Arsenal back to their best in statement Champions League win to bust set-piece mythPlans are in the works for a $40 million fieldhouse at Oak Lawn Community High School that will provide enough modernized space to house all of the school’s athletic, fitness and community programs in one centralized location at the south end of campus. Construction is set to begin in the spring of 2025 and take about 18 months. Planning started several years ago and administrators, teachers, board members, students and the community all had input, School District officials said. The new facility will have gymnasium facilities, a pool and locker rooms, four basketball courts and a 200 meter indoor track around the perimeter of the building. There will also be weight and wrestling rooms, as well as fitness space. Currently the district has two gyms at the north end of campus and two at the south. Having a gym in one location will mean students and staff won’t have to spend as much time going back and forth across campus, said Joseph McCurdy, assistant superintendent for Oak Lawn Community High School District 229. The two gyms at the north end of campus will be “repurposed” for Career and Technology Education, he said, fulfilling another school need once the athletics activities are consolidated. “There’s some benefits of having the fieldhouse on the south end of campus because that puts all the indoor athletic facilities in one area and it helps out academically with physical education classes all in one area,” McCurdy said. An architectural rendering depicts the exterior of a new fieldhouse planned at Oak Lawn Community High School. Officials called the planned construction of the facility a “major milestone” for the school and community. (School District 229) The athletic director and physical education staff will have offices in the new space. And after school athletic programs, such as volleyball, basketball, badminton and track, will all have homes there, too. There also will be enough space for community organizations, including the Oak Lawn Swim Association, Oak Lawn Outlaws Cheerleading and Football, Oak Lawn Baseball and Softball, and several other programs. School administrators are excited about the new facility, calling it a “major milestone” in a news release announcing the project. “Our new state-of-the-art fieldhouse will provide the resources for our athletes to flourish and offer all students a place to promote physical and mental health,” said Superintendent Shahe Bagdasarian. “Investing in this facility is investing in our students’ future success.” Students are looking forward to it, too, according to OLCHS athletic director Jeremey Cryan. “It’s an exciting time to be a Spartan,” Cryan said. “This facility is going to be a game changer for our athletic programs, student PE classes and community.” Cryan said the new facility means more space to host practices, competitions, events and youth camps. “Our athletes and programs work incredibly hard and are dedicated all year long,” he said. Track and field athletes were probably the most excited because of the challenges of playing the indoor season without an indoor track, Cryan said. “It’s exciting to be able to provide them a top-tier athletic space that will only help enhance their growth even more,” he said. An architectural rendering depicts the foyer at a new fieldhouse planned at Oak Lawn Community High School. Construction of the facility is planned to begin this spring. (School District 229) The district is paying for the facility with $21.5 million in working cash bonds, which it recently sold, along with funds reserved in anticipation of the project. DLA Architects of Itasca is designing the space. The district has made other physical improvements in recent years, including a new parking lot at the north end of campus and an updated lot for students a few years ago. The new fieldhouse offers “unparalleled opportunities,” the district said in the release. “I like how it focuses on our physical education, that all of our physical education classes will be in one area,” said McCurdy. “And also just the functionality in that now we’re putting all evening events in one area, which gives us the ability to more easily lock down and secure the building. “It gives us the ability to compete with our neighboring schools and the ability to provide the best facility and resources to our students and the community.” Janice Neumann is a freelance reporter for the Daily Southtown.
Uncertainty about earnings and geopolitics weighed on the major equity indexes Monday, as the math of downward earnings revisions and a muddle of news from abroad made for red numbers across the board at the close. There's little incoming economic data and no central banker speak this week, but markets will keep moving. According to FactSet, Wall Street analysts have revised downward their 2025 earnings per share (EPS) forecasts for S&P 500 companies by 0.5% over the past six months. Meanwhile, China's anti-monopoly authority is investigating the biggest publicly traded company in the world, but its politburo also indicated it will support a major economic stimulus effort, including the first adjustment to monetary policy in 14 years and "more proactive" fiscal policy. In the Middle East, rebels seized Damascus and President Bashar al-Assad fled to Russia, apparently ending a 13-year civil war and his family's six-decade dictatorship. And yet the yield on the 10-year U.S. Treasury note ticked up four basis points from 4.15% on Friday to 4.19% on Monday, a move that really doesn't reflect a flight to safety and might be more about shifting inflation expectations. China investigates Nvidia Nvidia ( NVDA ) stock declined 2.6% after the Chinese government announced an investigation of the AI chipmaker for "suspected violation of the country's anti-monopoly law and a decision by the market regulator on Nvidia 's acquisition of Mellanox Technologies," according to Xinhua News Agency . The State Administration for Market Regulation is reviewing Nvidia's recent behavior and its 2020 acquisition of Mellanox Technologies. China's approval of the Mellanox deal included a condition that Nvidia not discriminate against Chinese companies. Nvidia said in response that it's "happy to answer any questions regulators may have about our business." According to its fiscal 2025 third-quarter earnings report, Nvidia generates approximately 15% of its revenue in China. China's move to probe Nvidia is widely perceived as a response to the Biden administration and its imposition of restrictions on sales of high-tech memory chips and access to high-bandwidth memory technology. It's CPI Week We've entered the official blackout period ahead of the next Federal Open Market Committee meeting on December 17-18, and there isn't much on the economic calendar this week. Blackout periods begin the second Saturday preceding an FOMC meeting and end the Thursday following a meeting. So we won't be hearing from Fed Chair Jerome Powell or any of his colleagues until they make their next announcement on interest rates next Wednesday. What incoming data we will see between now and Thursday does bear on that decision, though, particularly Consumer Price Index (CPI) numbers for November. The Bureau of Labor Statistics will report November CPI on Wednesday at 8:30 am Eastern time. The Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland's Inflation Nowcasting model shows headline CPI at 2.70% and core CPI at 3.30% year over year. The model shows month-over-month headline CPI of 0.26% and core CPI of 0.27%. Headline annual CPI at 2.70% would mark an acceleration from 2.60% in October and potentially complicate the Fed's decision-making process. "Heading into the communications blackout period before the December FOMC meeting," writes Deutsche Bank Economist Amy Yang in a December 9 Fed Watcher update, "officials generally left the door open for a 25-basis-point rate cut." Yang notes that "other than Governor Waller, officials were not explicit about supporting such a move, and looked to maintain optionality around that decision pending the release of key data prior to the meeting." The economist expects the FOMC to cut by 25 basis points next week "before entering an extended pause through next year," highlighting this week's inflation data as "the ultimate arbiter of whether or not the Fed stays or goes at its final meeting of the year." These 'Boring' Picks Best Dividend Stocks to Buy for Dependable Dividend GrowthCabinet ministers have been warned they must find more savings in their departments as the Chancellor said “every pound” of Government spending will be scrutinised in a major budget review. Secretaries of State are being told that any outgoings which are not contributing towards one of Labour’s “priorities” must be cut as Rachel Reeves vows to wield “an iron fist against waste.” In letters sent by Chief Secretary to the Treasury Darren Jones, departments will be told to brace for “difficult” spending decisions in order to restore trust in the Government’s handling of the public finances. Every pound of departmental spending will be face a “line-by-line review” involving external finance experts from banks and think tanks in order to ensure it represents good value for money, the Treasury said. The Chancellor will on Tuesday launch the next round of Government spending, and is expected to warn departments that they “cannot operate in a business-as-usual way when reviewing their budgets for the coming years”. She will insist that areas focused on Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer’s “plan for change”, which includes targets to improve living standards across the country and build 1.5 million homes, must be prioritised. Ms Reeves said: “By totally rewiring how the Government spends money we will be able to deliver our plan for change and focus on what matters for working people. “The previous government allowed millions of pounds of taxpayers’ money to go to waste on poor value for money projects. We will not tolerate it; I said I would have an iron grip on the public finances and that means taking an iron fist against waste. “By reforming our public services, we will ensure they are up to scratch for modern day demands, saving money and delivering better services for people across the country. That’s why we will inspect every pound of Government spend, so that it goes to the right places and we put an end to all waste.” Under the Treasury’s plans, departments will ensure budgets are scrutinised by “challenge panels” of external experts including former senior management of Lloyd’s Banking Group, Barclays Bank and the Co-operative Group. These panels, which will also involve think tanks, academics and the private sector, will advise on which spending “is or isn’t necessary”, the ministry said. The Treasury said work has already begun, with an evaluation of the £6.5 million spent on a scheme that placed social workers in schools finding “no evidence of positive impact on social care outcomes”. “Departments will be advised that where spending is not contributing to a priority, it should be stopped,” it said. “Although some of these decisions will be difficult, the Chancellor is clear that the public must have trust in the Government that it is rooting out waste and that their taxes are being spent on their priorities.” Ms Reeves had already announced efficiency and productivity savings of 2% across departments in her autumn Budget as she seeks to put the public finances on a firmer footing. In a speech in east London, Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster Pat McFadden hinted at a further squeeze. “At the Budget the Chancellor demanded efficiency and productivity savings of 2% across departments – and there will be more to come,” he said. “As we launch the next phase of the spending review at its heart must be reform of the state in order to do a better job for the public.” The Liberal Democrats accused the Government of “missing opportunities and making self-defeating decisions” in the Budget, and urged it not to “make the same mistakes” in the spending review. The party’s Treasury spokeswoman, Daisy Cooper, said: “Leaving the social care sector in crisis is a false economy that will only put people at risk and damage the public finances. “The Government cannot afford to make the same mistakes in the spending review as they did with the Budget, missing opportunities and making self-defeating decisions. “The Government must use this Review to invest to save, taking into account the billions of pounds that could be saved in the NHS budget by investing.”
